Read More	NORFOLK DAILY NEWS; Norfolk, Nebraska; Thursday, October 19, 1922 front page Norfolk Girl Killed In Automobile Wreck Esther Schlack 15 Years Old, Pinned Under Car On Madison Road Three Others Are Bruised Fatal Accident Occurs While Speeding Car Is Returning From Public Dancing Party After Midnight--Investigation by Police Esther Schlack, 15 years old, was killed shortly before 2 o'clock this morning, Thelma White, also 15 years old, was badly bruised, John Allen and Adolph Kauffman, high school students, were slightly bruised when the Allen car, driven by Kauffman, turned over twice on the Meridian highway, three miles north and half mile east of Madison, pinning the entire party under the machine. The party of young people were returning to Norfolk from a public dance which was being held at the Madison armory. The occupants of the car claim a wheel came off the car and the brakes were not working. The Madison authorities who reached the scene shortly after the accident say the car was being driven at a high speed. Investigation is being made into the affair by the authorities, but it is not known whether an inquest will be held into the death of the Schlack girl. The dead girl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schlack, 404 South Third street. Thelma White is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. White. Her father is reported to be living at Brunswick, Neb., and the girl has been making her home with the Carrico family in the south part of the city. Car Belonged to Allen The automobile, a Haynes car, belonged to Allen who, according to a story told at Madison, was riding in the rear seat with the Schlack girl, Kauffman was in the front seat with the White girl and was driving the car. When the car reached a point half a mile east of the second turn in the Meridian road from Madison, the accident occured. The entire party was pinned under the machine. Finally, the two boys extricated themselves, and helped the White girl out of her prison. They were unable, however, to lift the car off the body of the Schlack girl who was crushed under the weight of the back seat. Five minutes later, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dierman who were returning to Battle Creek after their wedding celeb- ration came upon the scene. Mr. Werner of Battle Creek as driving the wedding car. The wedding party helped to lift the car and pull the imprisoned girl out. They immediately telephoned to Dr. F. A. Long who after arriving on the scene pronounced the Schlack girl dead. In the undertaking parlors of Johnson and Thenhaus here this morning, it was learned that the body of the Schlack girl was not badly bruised and it appeared as if she had been smothered while imprisoned under the car. After Dr. Long's examination the Madison undertaker brought the body and the two boys to Norfolk. The White girl was brought home by others. Parents Look Over Scene Mr. and Mrs. Schlack left Norfolk about 8 o'clock this morning for Madison to look over the scene where their daughter met her death. Police were busy during the morning endeavoring to secure a full statement from the two boys who were in the car. Adolph Kauffman told his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Kauffman, 1005 Riverside boulevard, that the wheel of the car came off and that the brakes were not working when the accident occurred. Kauffman Tells Story Adolph Kauffman who drove the automobile told the story of the fatal accident. "Johnny Allen, Esther Schlack, Thelma White and myself went to the dance at Madison Wednesday night in the Allen automobile. It was about 12:15 Thursday morning when we left the armory where the dance was being held," Kauffman said. "I was driving the car and Thelma White was in the front seat with me. There were no brakes on the car and we were driving along at a fair rate of speed. We were not speeding, however, and when the accident happened, I believe were going about twenty miles an hour. I did not see the corner three and a half miles north-east of Madison. I thought the corner was up the road a little farther, and we were going down hill I had shut off the gas and we were coasting when suddenly I saw the corner. I grabbed the emergency brake and had pulled it back about half way when the car skidded and slipped toward the ditch and turned over. Johnny Allen and Esther Schlack were in the back seat, Thelma White had got out from under the car ahead of me. I lifted with my back and finally got out myself and then helped Johnny get out. We tried with all our strength to lift the car up so we could get Esther out, but she was pinned under the back seat and we were unable to do a thing to help her. After about five minutes a car with a wedding party came along and helped us lift the car up and then we got Esther out. If the brakes had been on the car this terrible accident would never have happened. We had left the armory about fifteen minutes before it happened. We left at 12:15 and the accident happened about 12:30. We had stopped in Madison to get water for the radiator and were intending to go straight home." Kauffman's arm was sprained and he believes the sprain came when he used his entire strength with Allen in a desperate effort to lift the car off the body of the girl under the rear seat. The boy was noticeably affected as a result of the accident. NORFOLK DAILY NEWS; Norfolk, Nebraska; Monday, October 23, 1922 page 5 Funeral Record Esther Schlack Funeral services for Esther Schlack, who was killed in an automobile accident near Madison, were held at the home, 404 South Third street, at 2:30 Saturday afternoon and at Grace Lutheran church at 3 o'clock. The Rev. F. C. Brandhorst, officiating. Pallbearers were: Elmer Ohlen, Hoskins; Irvin Braasch, Elmer Braasch, Arthur Conrad, Victor Nenow, and John Bruhn. Esther Schlack was born Feb. 5, 1907, in Stanton county, five miles east of Norfolk. Later she moved with her parents to Hoskins, where she lived until about three years ago when her parents moved to Norfolk. She is survived by her father and mother, a bother and sister-in-law.
