She died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the Ashley Nursing Home. Esther V. Hildenbrand, daughter of Christian and Margaretha (Nitschke) Hildenbrand was born Jan. 9, 1920, seven miles southeast of Ashley on the family farm. This is where she grew up and attended country school. She helped on the family farm. She was united in marriage to August Schumacher on Feb. 28, 1943 in Peace Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. They made their home on his family's farm ten miles east of Ashley. They were general farmers raising small grains and livestock. In 1989, they retired and moved into Ashley. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. Esther loved to go fishing all year round. Visiting and spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special times in her life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She was a former member of Peace Lutheran Church and St. James Lutheran Church, both rural Ashley, where she had been active and the Ashley Senior Citizens. Survivors include her husband of Ashley, one son, Donald (Molly) Schumacher of Badger, SD, one daughter, Wanda (Tom) Budnick of Duluth, MN., one daughter-in-law, Shirley (Ruben) Thurn of Ashley, five grandchildren, John Schumacher, Laura Honeycutt, Katie Sjulstad, Quentin Schumacher and Carla Schumacher and two great-grandchildren, Anna Schumacher and James Schumacher. Her parents, one son, Gary, five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Casketbearers were John Schumacher, Quentin Schumacher, Dave Honeycutt, Ralph Fiechtner, Jeffrey Jenner, Raymond Schumacher. Organist was Donna Heupel. Her family prefers memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 257, Ashley, ND 58413. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley have been entrusted with the arrangements. Ashley Tribune
