Esther (Wittmaier) Wolf was born north of Beulah, on the family farm on Dec. 11, 1919. Her parents were Karl and Gertrude (Doffee) Wittmaier. She lost her birth mom when she was three years of age. and she lived with her father, Karl, and her new step mom who also brought a large number of children into the union. She was one of 11 children and was the last surviving sibling. Esther married Tobias Wolf, on Dec. 16, 1937 and they lived with his parents until 1940 when they moved to a farm, which they purchased, south of Hazen. They were parents of two children , Rodney and Arletta. Esther and Tobias lived on the farm until 1978 when they moved to a new home built approximately a mile from the farm on land they owned. While living on the farm, Tobias and Esther raised wheat, corn, oats, and alfalfa. They also raised cattle, pigs and a variety of fowl. Esther loved her ducks and chickens. Esther continued to rent out the farm land as Tobias had done once he decided to quit farming. They stopped farming in 1984 and Tobias passed away on April 15, 1990, (Easter Sunday). Esther lived in the home for a short period of time before moving to Hazen where she lived in an apartment until deciding to move into the Sakakawea Senior Suites, an assisted living unit, attached to the Hazen Hospital. In the early part of 2014 she moved to the nursing home in Killdeer, prior to moving to a nursing home in Rapid City where she could be close to her daughter. She loved to crochet and made many afghans for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and others. The afghans, along with crocheted Christmas ornaments, dollies, table clothes, etc., are family heirlooms that will be passed along from one generation to the next. Another one of her pleasures was gardening and growing flowers both outdoors and indoors.She was a long time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen. Esther is survived by her son, her daughter, and six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one granddaughter, Miriam Wolf; and her 10 siblings and their spouses from the first marriage.
