Deardorff, Fred Sivertsen, Richard Froning, Don Juhl, Paul Burke, Sam Miller, Linnell Haigh and Earl Houck. Hanks’ death occurred last Thursday, June 18, in the Veterans’ Hospital in Sioux Falls. He had been ill for a long period of time, and several times during the last year had required hospital treatment. About a month before his death he was again hospitalized in Memorial hospital, and two weeks ago had been taken to Sioux Falls. A veteran of World War Two, and a former county official, Hanks was born near White Lake, S. D., November 25, 1908, one of eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Hanks. When he was eleven years old the family moved to a farm south of Harrold, where he lived until 1930 when he came to Miller to work. He was employed by Hand County as highway construction machine operator, later working for the Trotman Construction Company, and on the Alcan Highway from 1941 to 1943. He was married to Sylvia Resel on September 10, 1930 and they were the parents of four sons. March 29, 1944, Hanks entered the armed services, serving overseas with the 184th Infantry in Germany, and later with the Ninth Air Force in France until his discharge n December 1945. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantry Badge. Returning to Miller after his discharge, Hanks and his family moved to a farm, which they operated for nine months, until he was elected sheriff of Hand County in 1946. He served in that office for four years, later returning to construction work. April 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Hanks purchased the Northside Café, which he was operating at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, four sons, Gerald, Keith and Larry of Miller, and Ethan of Lemmon; two sisters, Mrs. Audrey Sligo, Miller, and Mrs. Rhoda Raph, Medofrd, Ore.; four brothers, Ora, Harold, Paul, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Levi, Portland, Ore., and Harry, Cottage Grove, Ore. There are also four grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
