Description	:	Ethan was the son of William Dern and Margaret Lambrecht. His son Andrew Jackson Dern's biography said of Ethan: "at the age of 13, lost his father, when the support of his widowed mother and several younger brothers and sisters devolved mainly on him. He worked as a laborer on farms and on a canal for several years, and after his marriage he farmed on shares for a time; he then bought 160 acres in Fairfield Co. (Ohio), but in 1855 sold out and came to Carroll Co. Indiana, bought 160 acres on which he resided just 21... Read More	Ethan was the son of William Dern and Margaret Lambrecht. (Ohio), but in 1855 sold out and came to Carroll Co. Indiana, bought 160 acres on which he resided just 21 years, and in 1876 came to Union Township, White County (Indiana) and bought the farm of 200 acres on which he now lives." Granddaughter Rosabelle Daugherty remembered hearing that Ethan came to Indiana from Ohio with $7,000 in gold in a barrel, and that the bottom of the barrel fell out and the gold traveled the rest of the way in the bed of the wagon. She said that he was known as a fine gentleman, a pillar of the Methodist Church, and never known to say a harsh word. He was short and sturdy and had dark hair. He married Zelda on January 29, 1846, and the couple had nine children, eight of whom survived. He died on New Year's Day 1895 of pneumonia. In his daughter Emma Jane Daugherty's family Bible his name is spelled with an "R" as a middle initial.
