Ethel was born July 28, 1914, on a farm near Farwell to James and Kate (Jess) Baxter. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Frode Madsen, on June 30, 1995. Survivors are: sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Theresa Madsen of Wheatland, Wyo., Gary Madsen of Grand Island and Kenneth and Peggy Madsen of Wilmington, N.C.; grandchildren, Alan and Stephani Madsen, Aaron Madsen, all of Wheatland, Brent and Monica Madsen of Hebron, Brandee and K.C. Welty of Grand Island, Kevin Madsen Wilmington and Jason and Jenny Madsen of Columbia, Md., and nine great-grandchildren. Ethel was baptized as a baby in the Presbyterian Faith. She attended school at Farwell and graduated from Farwell High School. Ethel always wanted to be a teacher. Her first teaching experience was at District 52, where she taught for six years. Ethel was united in marriage to Frode P. Madsen on June 16, 1937, at Farwell. After their marriage, she was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and became a member of St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Nysted. The couple farmed in the Dannebrog and Nysted area. They later purchased the farm and continued living there even after Frode retired. She continued her teaching career where she taught the upper room students at Nysted for two years. She continued to take classes at The University of Nebraska at Kearney and get her teaching degree then taught in the Centura Elementary School. Later, being qualified she became the Elementary and High School Librarian for nine years. She retired in 1979, due to her husband's failing health. Ethel later moved into St. Paul to Parkside Plaza, Matelyn Retirement Community and Heritage Living Center. Ethel was devoted to her family and always happy to see them. She crocheted afghans for her family and did fancywork. She was a homemaker and was known for her baking. She enjoyed reading, and playing bridge, pitch and pinochle. She and Frode enjoyed dancing and square dancing. Ethel lived an active life. Ethel was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Elsie Baliman and Hilda Horky and twin sister, Bessie Baxter. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, St. Paul, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on August 16, 2011
