Read More	ETHEL ALGER Ethel Dell Alger, the youngest daughter of Holley and Cynthia J. Alger, was born on the home farm close to Edgewood, Iowa, on Jan. 14th, 1887. In this vicinity her life was spent with the exception of eighteen months spent in California. Her education was obtained in the Public Schools but was seriously interfered with by illness; for twenty years ago she became afflicted with rheumatism and that dread disease never relinquished its grip on her body. But though handicapped and, and in a measure, crippled by the disease her sunny disposition, her genuine interest in others and her desire to work and be of service in the world won for her a large circle of friends and enabled her to be of real service in the community. Early in life she identified herself with the Congregational church of Edgewood but later, on March 3, 1912, she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Her Christian life was not a form, accepted because other members of the family accepted it, but true faith in Jesus Christ that found joy in devotion and service. For a number of years she was Treasurer of the Methodist Sunday School. For the past two years she was Treasurer of the Benevolence Fund of the church. She held the place of Secretary of the Ladies Aid Society for a time. Besides other places of trust and responsibility to all of which she brought her good business ability, and to which she gave the closest attention, all born out of a love for Jesus Christ and a desire to be of service in His church. The same business care was given to the family in which since her father's death, which occurred in May, 1912, she has been the financial secretary. One by one, because of failing health and weakness she reluctantly surrendered her offices, but not without heartaches and tears. Even at the last, when is was apparent that the end was very near, she still wanted to get well that she might do more work for God. Her spirit went home to God, who gave it, in the early morning of October 16, 1918, her age being 31 years, 8 months, and 2 days. She leaves to mourn her going, her mother, four brothers and two sisters. They are Mrs. Cynthia Alger, her bereaved mother, at home; H. Burt Alger of Manteca, California; Lou E. at home; S. Worthy, of Chicago; Anson of Staples, Minn.; Myron J. of Edgewood, Iowa and Edna C., a Presbyterian missionary at Shuntefu, China. Besides she leaves, a little niece, Jean Alger, who has been in the home since babyhood, and a number of other relatives. Her friends, and they are a legion, also are feeling deeply their loss. But our loss is her gain. The funeral service, because of the quarantine, was held at the home on Friday afternoon, October 18th, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. S. C. Bretnall, and the body was laid to rest in the family lot in the Edgewood cemetery. Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - October 30, 1918
