Ethel Evangeline ‘Vangie' Malm was born on Dec 30, 1918, in Meriden, IA, to the late Rev. Ethel Evangeline ‘Vangie' Malm was born on Dec 30, 1918, in Meriden, IA, to the late Rev. Joseph ‘Joe' Malm and Ethel Kinzley Malm Anderson. ‘Vangie' was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 66 years: C. Oscar Sheppard Jr.; an infant daughter: Delayne Ethel Sheppard; brothers: Lawrence ‘Moon' S. Malm, and Stanley Anderson; and sisters: Elizabeth ‘Betty' A. Anderson and Pearl A. Engel. Vangie graduated from Salem High School in 1936, attended Sioux Falls College, Nettleton Commercial College, Bethel Academy in St. Paul, MN, and concluded her formal education at General Beadle Teachers College in Madison, SD. After attaining her teaching certificate she taught school for 3 plus years . . . all 8 grades at two different one-room schoolhouses near Montrose and Salem, SD. On September 27, 1942, she married C. Oscar Sheppard, Jr., in the Ramsey Baptist Church, rural Montrose, SD. She joined Oscar at air bases in Liberal, KS, San Antonio, TX, and San Diego, CA, as he advanced his WWII Army Air Force military training, and until he piloted his B-24J Liberator bomber across the Pacific to the CBI Theater during the war, when she returned to Sioux Falls, SD, to await his return. After the war, Vangie and Oscar farmed near Salem, SD, until 1956, when the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where Oscar sold insurance. Vangie worked part-time for J. C. Penney Co. and later, for Ideal Hardware where, affectionately known as ‘The Cake Lady', it was said she was responsible for building that store's cake decorating supplies department into one of the largest and best in eastern SD. Work was one of many ways she contributed to family and community. In 1991, she retired from Ideal Hardware. Vangie was an excellent cook and baker, decorating hundreds of wedding cakes over the years, baking spectacular Swedish tea rings, and bringing home several purple and blue ribbons at local county fairs for her specialties. Vangie and Oscar loved to travel, and together visited most of the US states, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, the Holy Land, Egypt, New Zealand and Australia. Proud of her Swedish heritage, she was elated to finally locate her late father's ancestors in the late 1990's. If there was one place she had wished to visit, it would have been Sweden, but as she said, "I found out too late in life where I ought to have gone!" Vangie and Oscar moved to Trail Ridge Retirement Community in 2002, where she resided until deteriorating health required a move to a nursing facility in Mar, 2012. Vangie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at age 11 and continued to love, serve, and depend on Him to her final day. Over the years, she donated time as a Sunday School teacher, and as a leader in girls' and women's ministries, as well as Brownies, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her kindness and gentle ways will be remembered by many for years to come. Surviving her are her son: Ralph and wife Sharon Sheppard, Isanti, MN; and daughter: Carmen Carol Sheppard, Arden Hills, MN; grandsons: Mark and wife Dana Sheppard, Sterling, VA, and their children Bruce and Kate; Jeremy and wife Mary Sheppard, Magnolia, DE, and their daughter Eva; special ‘adopted' family: Jacqueline and Barry Zachariahs, Sioux Falls, SD, and their children: André (wife Carrie), Hamilton, Gretchen, and Kirk; sisters: Ardis A. Lomheim and husband Lou, Sioux Falls, SD, Donna A. Fuller, Whitefish, MT; brother: Waldo Anderson and wife Donna , Tucson, AZ; sisters-in-law: Carol L. Sheppard, Coeur d' Alene, ID, and Virginia L. Anderson Larson, Madison, SD; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, and great and great-great nieces/nephews as well.
