Description	:	The Recorder March 1, 1984 Mrs. Ethel Colaw, an 85 year old Blue Grass woman died last Thursday when a fire broke out at her home just off route 644. Billingsley, Highland County medical examiner, said that Mrs. Colaw died either from smoke inhalation or severe burning, but it was impossible to tell because the body was so badly burned. Dr. Billingsley said there would be no autopsy. Mrs. Colaw's home, nicknamed the Hansel House, was gutted. The roof also collapsed, but the thick brick walls remained intact. A few rooms in the house were not totally destroyed by the fire, but were heavily damaged by smoke and water. The antebellum home was built in 1855 by Benjamin Hansel, and has a small brick building in the back yard that was once used as slave quarters. It was not damaged in the fire. The Colaw family hopes to restore the historic building if it is possible. Mrs. Ethel Fleisher Colaw, 85, of Blue Grass died Thursday, Feb. 23, 1984 at her home. She was born March 4, 1896 near Blue Grass, a daughter of William and Frances Nicholas Fleisher. She was a member of Harper Chapel United Methodist Church. Her husband, Benjamin H. Colaw, died Oct. 16, 1975. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Reba C. Gutshall of Richmond and Mrs. Bonnie Crenshaw of Hampton; a son, Benny Colaw of Blue Grass; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was conducted 2 p.m. in the chapel of Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Daniel C. Agnew and the Rev. Julius W. Strode. Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery. Mrs. Colaw was born June 1. 1894 near Blue Grass, a daughter of Will and Fanny Nicholas Fleisher. She was a member of Harper Chapel United Methodist Church. Her husband, Clarence H. Colaw, died May 29, 1964. Surviving are two foster sons, Emmett Fleisher of Seward, Neb. and Harper Hiner Jr. of Concord. N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Colaw of Blue Grass; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 30 from Harper Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lynn Wilbur. Burial was in the Fleisher Cemetery. Obaugh Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Emmett Fleisher came to live with his aunt & uncle Esta & Clarence Colaw, after Emmett's father was killed in limestone quarry accident in Martinsburg, W.Va. in May 1929. Emmett's mother died a few months after his birth in October 1922. June 3, 1972 Esta held an personnel property auction at her home in Highland on the Va/W.Va. state line.
