Description	:	Ethel Irene Briggs, age 97 of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Horton, IA, and Fairbury, NE, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 in St. Petersburg where she had resided for the past eight years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Horton Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Horton Cemetery. Ethel was born November 27, 1913 near Dike, Iowa in Grundy county, the daughter of Charles W. and Letha (McCann) Woodman. She received her education in the rural schools of Black Hawk County and later attended Dike Consolidated High School. On May 2, 1934 Ethel was united in marriage to Elwin Edward Briggs. To this union, two children were born; Phyllis Ethel (Don) Dallmann of Fairbury, NE and Darrell Elwin Briggs of St. Petersburg, FL. The couple farmed briefly in Douglas Township before moving to Horton and later to Plainfield. Elwin was employed by The Briggs Market, his older brother Harold's grocery store. In l943, Elwin and Ethel purchased the Horton Store which they operated until l960. In addition to running the family business, Ethel and Elwin made time to be very active with the Horton Baptist Church. The couple loved to host and attend family gatherings, raise produce and grow flower gardens, embroider, quilt, correspond with family and friends, read voraciously, play the piano and accordion, and always be a great helpmate, wife, mother, and grandmother. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Phyllis; her son, Darrell; three granddaughters, Michelle (James) Ledden of Beatrice, NE; Melissa (Craig) Mahloch of Fairbury, NE; and Deborah Klein of Nelson, NE; five great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Carol (Frank) Sherman, Esther (Clifford) Sorensen; and one brother, Harold Charles Woodman. Hugeback & Chenowrth Funeral Home
