Hazelwood, 92, of LaVale, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born in Detroit, Mich., on Nov. 11, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Carrie (Fink) Gensheimer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Hazelwood Jr., who passed away in 1965; her sister, Frances Savage; and her brother-in-law, William B. Somerville. Ethel grew up in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and graduated from Lawrenceburg High School in 1945. Ethel worked throughout high school and college so that she could attend Indiana University. She graduated in 1949 from the University's Kelley School of Business with a Bachelors of Business Degree in Accounting. Upon returning to Lawrenceburg, Ethel was employed by Seagram's Distillery in the Tax Accounting Department. It was in Lawrenceburg where she met her husband who was on assignment for the George F. Hazelwood Construction Company. After moving to Cumberland, Ethel was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, Junior Woman's Civic Club, Woman's Civic Club, and the LaVale Century Club. Ethel volunteered at the Allegany County Chapter of the American Red Cross on the Blood Mobile. As a longtime member of the Cumberland Country Club, she enjoyed playing golf and bridge. Ethel was also a member of the ABL Bowling League. Ethel is survived by her sons, G. Fred Hazelwood III, DDS, and wife, Sharon, and Gilbert W. Hazelwood; grandchildren, Joshua B. Hazelwood and wife, Danielle, and Jordan A. Hazelwood; great-grandchildren, Madison and Briella Hazelwood; sister, Virginia Gensheimer; brother, Arthur Gensheimer; brother-in-law, Robert S. Savage; sister-in-law, Jeanne H. Somerville; as well as several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul, 125 Fayette St., Cumberland, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2019, from 11 a.m. until noon. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Shrine immediately following visitation at noon. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
