Read More	ETHEL MARGUERITE "PENNY" MATSON July 10, 1925 ~ March 13, 2010 Ethel "Penny" Marguerite Simms Matson was born in Manor, Washington on July 10, 1925 to Earnest and Charlotte Simms. Penny was a lifelong resident of Battle Ground, Washington. She married Lewis Albert Matson, her childhood sweetheart, on July 28, 1944. After 64 years of marriage and eleven children, Lewis preceded her in death by almost 15 months, which she couldn't help but feel was about 14 months too long. Penny slipped quietly from the grip of congestive heart failure into the arms of Jesus on March 13, 2010, where she and we are confident she is reunited with her beloved husband and other loved ones. Penny spent her adult years and energy raising her large family just north of Battle Ground with the adoration and support of her husband. As the children came quickly, the home seemed to become smaller, and the early years were spent in a four-room home where all of the family living was carried out in the kitchen. In that crowded room, cheerful, clean and organized, warm with the wood stove, the smells of cooking, and the sounds of singing, the family life centered on Penny who seems to have needed very little personal space. In more recent years Penny also enjoyed her much expanded home which was capable of holding her ever larger extended family as they flocked around the draw of her mother's heart, her intelligence, her curiosity about the world, and her commitment to keep learning. Penny gave her life to Jesus in the early years of her marriage to Lew and attended the Apostolic Lutheran church in Hockinson until her failing health and hearing kept her housebound. Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis in 2008; her parents, Earnest and Charlotte Simms who died while she was still a child; and all of her four siblings, Earnest "Lee" Simms, Gene Simms, Ralph Simms, and Charlotte Mason; her first grandchild, Kenton John Kaiser (1966-1977); and a few precious babies were also awaiting Grandma on the other side. Penny is survived by her seven sons: Karl Matson with wife Becky of Yacolt, Jack Matson with wife Ann of Amboy, Van Matson with wife Laura of Battle Ground, Paul Matson with wife Cheryl of Battle Ground, Rodney Matson with wife Joy of Yacolt, Roger Matson with wife Priscilla of Campobello, SC, and Norman Matson with wife Aurora of Battle Ground. She is also survived by her four daughters: Joan Spence with husband Tim of Battle Ground, Diana Aho with husband Wilho of Amboy, Marsha Hanson with husband Leslie of Ponsford, MN, and Nora Mickelson with husband Andy of Yacolt. Penny will be remembered with love and greatly missed by 73 grandchildren; 115 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the remaining members of the large Matson family Penny married into: Clara Matson of Yacolt, WA, Jim and Doris Matson of Brush Prairie, WA, Chuck and Sharon Matson of Yacolt, WA, Jim and Rhoda Olin of Vanderhoof, B.C.; and many others including nieces and nephews from both her family and Lew's who counted on her being there. Penny created the kind of home which welcomed frequent stops for coffee and fellowship with friends and family from far and near. She will be greatly missed by many people. Evening calling hours on Saturday, March 20, 2010 are from 7:00 to 9:00 at church. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hockinson. Calling hours and viewing will start at 2:00 p.m. at the church. The service will be held at 3:00 p.m. with interment at Gravel Point Cemetery immediately after.
