Wood, age 89 of Mapleton and formerly of Smithland, Iowa, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 24, at the United Methodist Church in Smithland with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Ardith Armour was the organist for the service and Myron Armour was the soloist. He sang, "Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden". Wood, age 89 of Mapleton and formerly of Smithland, Iowa, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Ethel Mildred was born to Charles W. and Emma B. (Petit) Davis at Smithland, IA, on November 29, 1915. She attended Smithland High School and graduated with the class of '34. Ethel was united in marriage to Lyle H. Wood on December 6, 1934, in Sioux City, Iowa. From this union two children were born. The family lived in Smithland where Ethel enjoyed taking care of the home and the family. Lyle passed away on May 9, 1980. Ethel continued to live in Smithland until December of 2002 when she entered Maple Heights Care Center in Mapleton, IA. Ethel was a member of the Smithland United Methodist Church and the UMC Ladies Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #0666 of Smithland. Ethel enjoyed the Neighborhood Birthday Club, and she belonged to the Cemetery Society. Those remaining to cherish Ethel's memory include her daughter, Barbara Larson of rural Castana, IA; her six grandchildren, Randy Larson and his wife, Karen of Onawa, IA, Lisa Smith and Dale Jones of Castana, Brad Larson and his wife, Judy of Grimes, IA, Stephanie Eichmeyer and her husband, Evan of Sacramento, CA, Nicole Hinkel and her husband, Mike of Ankeny, IA, and Amanda Funderman and her husband, Hank of Sloan, IA; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Emma; her husband, Lyle; her son, Charles; her son-in-law, Darrell Larson; three brothers and six sisters. Pallbearers were Mark Koenigs, Clay Larson, Gene Melby, Louis Reed, Mike Wood and Jody Wood.
