Description	:	GREENVILLE - Ethel Searcy Brown Derby Donovan, 91, a resident of the Cypress Glen Retirement Community, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 21, 2017. The visitation will be held at The Memorial Baptist Church Friday, December 29, at 10:30AM, followed by the memorial service at 11:30AM. Entombment will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Donovan was born in the Clifton community near Spartanburg, SC, the only daughter of eleven children born to Dalton Whetstone Brown and Ethel Mae Searcy Brown. She had a love of her large family and of life itself which brought her much pleasure. Many were the memories of Sunday afternoon jam sessions with her playing piano while brothers played their instruments and everyone joined in. Their home was always the gathering place for many friends and family. While she was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, she always provided leadership and support to her children's activities both at school and after school groups. For a number of years she enjoyed serving as a Pink Lady at the Tampa General Hospital. Much time was given to serving in her churches through the years where she loved teaching the primary children. Having a natural musical talent, she often played piano as she could sit down and play just about any piece by ear. She even had her own fifteen minute radio show at the tender age of eleven. Another gift she had was with hand crafts, leaving many special gifts to her family. In 1943, Ethel was married to Sgt. Thomas Fred Derby, an Army soldier who died in September 1944 in action in France during WWII. In February 1945, their daughter was born, Patricia Dianne Derby, who was the light of her life. The Lord blessed her again in September 1947 with a marriage to Joseph Timothy Donovan, her husband of 56 years until his death in November 2003. After leaving South Carolina in 1954, she and Joe lived 50 years in central Florida where his work had taken them. When Joe retired, they enjoyed trips in their Winnebago to places like Nova Scotia and British Columbia, Canada, with many stops along their way, enjoying the beautiful country in which they lived. Following Joe's passing, Mrs. Donovan moved to Greenville, NC, in 2005 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Living at the Cypress Glen Retirement Community was like finding her large family again. She enjoyed all her new home had to offer, especially her dear friends Elsie Hill and Dorothy Dunham. She participated in the women's class of Community Bible Study with her daughter where circle of friends increased. She was also a member of The Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member of the Torchbearer's Class. This group of ladies were like sisters, especially her teacher, Mrs. Mary Mann. In addition to her parents and her husbands, Mrs. Donovan was preceded in death by all of her brothers and most of her sisters-in-law: Walter and his wife Garnet, Frank, John Roland, Dalton Jr. and his wife Genelle, Sidney and his wife Ola Sue, Loren and his wife Kathleen, Homer Lee and his wife Tony, James (infant), Ernest (an infant and Ethel's twin), and Louis. In addition to these, her son-in-law, Stanley Roger Stansell, grandson-in-law, Garrett Christian Klein and great-grandson, Bennett Derby Klein, precede her in death. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Patricia Donovan Stansell of Greenville, NC; "daughter" Elaine Bielen of Knoxville, TN; son Michael Timothy Donovan, and his wife, Rhonda, of Belle Isle, FL; granddaughter Stacy Dianne Stansell Gardner and her husband, Matthew, of Nashville, TN; granddaughter Jennifer Adrienne Nielsen and her husband, John, of Columbus, OH; grandson Matthew Timothy Donovan and his wife, Connie of Knoxville, TN; dearly loved great-grandchildren Andrew Lee Gardner, Rachel Anne Donovan, Aria D. Nielsen, and Tristan M. Nielsen. Also her two sisters-in-law Helen Brown (John Roland's wife) of Spartanburg, SC, and Hazel Brown (Louis' wife) of McDonough, GA. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Cypress Glen who have provided such an excellent environment during these last years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Cypress Glen Benevolent Care Fund, 100 Hickory St., Greenville, NC, or to The Memorial Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 1510 Greenville Blvd., Greenville, NC, 27858.
