Eugene Albert Pestoni, 48, fell 100 feet to his death, according to the Napa County Coroner's office. He had been hunting with relatives and friends. None of his companions witnessed the accident. They heard a shout and the sound of Pestoni's gun discharging and falling rocks. His body was discovered in the canyon below. Due to the difficult terrain of the region, recovery efforts took approximately seven hours. A helicopter from Hamilton Air Force Base was utilized in the effort, and about six deputies from the Napa County Sheriff's Dept. participated. Mr. Pestoni worked for the St. Helena Star Newspaper Co. for 30 years, since he was eighteen years old, and has been the shop foreman. He was born and educated in St. Helena and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was married in Napa to Glenda White in 1953 and they they in the Napa Valley all of their lives. He was active in civic affairs, working with the Boy Scouts. He retired as a Police Reserve Officer this year. He served on the Chamber of Commerce Board and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Pestoni of St. Helena two sons, Steven and Jeffry Pestoni; and a daughter, Elizabeth Pestoni, all of St. Helena: Also surviving are his father, Amile Pestoni, St. Helena and two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Alice) Martinelli of St. Helena and Mrs. David (Evelyn) Hagerty of Saratoga, Calif. Nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Morrison Funeral Chapel, St. Helena. Interment was in the St. Helena Cemetery, The family prefers memorial gifts to the charity of the donor's choice.
