In the death of Eugene Albert McGregor. Gunnison county lost one of the 'Old Timers' who had done much toward making this country a great cattle country. His father, a charter member of the Cattle Association, 'Gene' McGregor, as he was to the 'boys' was an active stockman owning a fine ranch on the Powderhorn. He came to Gunnison in 1879 and later went to Lake City where he operated a saw mill but he was at heart a stockman and it was not long before he was riding the range and had his own ranch. On December 12, 1898, he married Miss Louena(sic) Turner of Pitkin. Mrs McGregor and one son, John Albert survive him. About four years ago, Mr McGregor retired from active management of his ranch and with his family went to California. On May last he returned to his home at Powderhorn, and was again the ranchman. On the 15th of last October he was helping his son with a very fractious colt, and was holding the animal while the son broke a thick skift of ice so the horse could drink. The colt became so frightened and began to plunge, Mr McGregor was thrown against the bank of the stream injuring both limbs below the knee. He was brought to Gunnison where he remained for two days with his sister, Mr Henry Knoll. He was then removed to his home and all the loving care of the family or the skill of surgeons could keep away the Grim Specter. The funeral services were most beautiful and consoling. The Rev Wm I Jones preached the sermon and Mrs Reed sang the two beautiful hymns, Nearer My God to Thee and Lead Kindly Light. As a touching tribute to the long friendship of cattlemen, all those who had ridden range with Mr McGregor came to pay their last respects. He was laid to rest in the Powderhorn cemetery beside his mother and father. It was a last request that he be left where he had lived and served. Mr McGregor was born on a farm near Rock Island, Illinois, July 11, 1856. He was of Scotch-Irish descent and was the second eldest of a family of ten. He is survived by his wife and son and eight sisters. The life of Eugene McGregor was a well spent and useful one. Always ready to aid his fellow man, he was beloved by all who knew him and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved ones.
