He married Minnie Garrett in September 1945. Eugene C. Kolling, 77, of What Cheer died at the Keokuk County Hospital in Sigourney about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 1958. Death followed a stroke. He was born in Belgium September 26, 1880 and came to What Cheer with his parents when he was six years old. During his residency in What Cheer he spent many years in public service. He served as mayor, as city clerk, Marshall, water superintendent and as a member of the city council. For a number of years he had been associated with his son-in-law, Merval Hamilton, in operating a service station. It was while working as bookkeeper there Tuesday that he was stricken. He is survived by his wife, Minnie; three daughters, Miss Adalene Kolling, Mrs. Lucille Dagle and Mrs. Merval Hamilton all of What Cheer; four stepchildren, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Whyle funeral chapel. The Rev. Joseph Mason, Methodist pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery.
