Eugene (Gene) Charles Braun, the son of Bernard and Anna (Kraus) Braun was born December 27, 1933 on a farm 3 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Church, attended St. Anthony’s school until the 4th grade when he moved with his folks 6 ½ miles East of Cedar Rapids. He then went to District 9 and graduated from the 10th grade in 1949. Following graduation, Gene worked on the family farm. Gene joined the Army on November 2, 1955. He went through Basics and Radio School where he learned the Morse code at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. After graduation, he went to Korea and served as a radio operator. Gene was honorably discharged on September 19, 1957. On April 7, 1958, Gene was united in marriage to Rosella Scholl at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Albion. They lived on the family farm where they raised their 11 children. Along with farming, Gene worked for the State Road Department rolling up snow fences. He also baled hay for several farmers. He ran anhydrous and helped harvest corn for people. Following retirement Gene worked as a custodian at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. In 1999, they built a new house in Cedar Rapids, and moved to town. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th Degree Knight. Gene served on the District 9 school board and the Rural Fire Board. Gene loved his family and grandchildren and loved playing cards, softball, and bowling. Gene is survived by his wife Rosella of Cedar Rapids, NE; 11 children: Anthony of Cedar Rapids, NE; William of Columbus, NE; Susan of Bloomington, IL; Chuck (Deb) of Cedar Rapids, NE; Leo of Fort Collins, CO; Kenneth (Ann) of Wahoo, NE; Robert (Natalie) of Columbus, NE; Leonard (April) of Friend, NE; Mark (Diane) of Omaha, NE; Cheryl of Omaha, NE; Donald (Abbie) of Atlantic, IA; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother Arnold of Rosholt, SD; sisters-in-law: Sally Braun of Columbus, NE; Pauline Braun of Albion, NE; and Rose Ann Braun of Columbus, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Andrew (Mathilda), Laurence (Lucille), Paul, Fritz, and George Braun; three sisters: Louise (Ben) Cremers; Mary Ann (Norman) Kurtenbach; and Rosemary (Fred) Hefner.
