Eugene was buried Feb. 11, 2005. His parents were: Lester & Elva (Gottula)Gottula. ------------------ Beatrice Daily Sun (NE) - Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Eugene Everett Gottula, 75, Elk Creek, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha. He had experienced failing health since his stroke in 1992, and had struggled with mouth and throat cancer the past nine months. He was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Pawnee City, the son of Lester "Bus" and Elva Gottula, was baptized Nov. 24, 1929, and attended elementary school at District 59 and St. Peter's Lutheran Parochial School. After graduation from Elk Creek High School in 1947, he continued to farm with his dad. He served his country for nine years in the Nebraska National Guard beginning in 1948. During this time, he coached and organized basketball games for the Elk Creek elementary and junior high boys, officiating high school basketball games with his uncle, Ivan Gottula, as well as officiating and playing "town team" basketball games as far away as Yuma, Colo. He married Ilma Gobber on June 20, 1952, in St. James Lutheran Church. He was a life-long member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and served a term on the finance committee. He was involved with the wheat harvest for several years. In 1969, he was instrumental in organizing the Johnson County Rural Water District and served as its first president. He enjoyed nature, sports, bird watching and hunting, especially coyote hunting. He was a member of Bluebirds Across Nebraska and the Nebraska Nut Growers Association. Survivors: wife, Ilma; son, Alan and special friend Gina of Elk Creek; grandson, John of Lubbock, Texas; brother, Stan and wife Shirley of Merna; stepmother, Murl Gottula of Elk Creek; half brothers, Mike Hanika and wife Colleen of Enterprise, Ala., Kent Hanika and wife Pam of Lincoln; half sister, Linda Drybread and husband Mike of Mansfield, Texas; nieces and nephews. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek. Burial: church cemetery. Visitation at the Wherry Brothers Mortuary, Third and Jackson streets, Tecumseh, on Thursday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to the family's choice. Wherry Brothers Mortuary, Tecumseh, in charge of arrangements.
