Mr. McCarthy was taken with a severe chill about one week before the time of hid death and his condition rapidly grew worse, the attending physician diagnosing his sickness as an acute attack of pneumonia, and his death resulting from a complication of cancer and pneumonia. For many years the deceased had battled against the ravages of a cancer which found its origin in the upper part of the right check and temple and in an operation to arrest its progress his eye had to be removed some years ago. He was uncomplaining and showed wonderful forbearance during all the years of his physical discomfort and pain. In his final illness, the years of his physical impariment as the result of the cancer showed quickly, and while a trained nurse waited on him in the last days of his illness there was little hope offered the grief-stricken family that he could long survive. His death came peacefully after a period of unconsciousness at the time state above. "Gene McCarthy was on of the substantial farmers of this vicinity for many years. He was highly respected as a neighbor and had made many warm friends who now feel the pang of grief that must come at his departure. Genial and kind, hospitable and ever ready to assist when help was needed, he had won a high place in the hearts of those who knew his quick response to sympathy and his willingness to extend aid to a friend or any deserving cause. He is survived by wife, one daughter, Mrs. Rosaline Hartman, and two sons, Eugene and Wm. at home. Also one brother and three sisters. The funeral which was set for Wednesday, was postponed 'till this morning, Thursday, on account of the rain and bad roads. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church (sic) of Lawrence, and also a member of St. Stphens Council, Knights of Columbus 1906, Lawrence. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, May 31, 1923; pg. 7
