Read More	The Monroe Booster Monroe, NE Wed 29 Sept 1954 p. 1 Eugene Rohatsch Rites at Mon roe Eugene Rohatsch was born June24, 1913 at Humphrey, Nebraska, son of Jesse Comstock and Joseph Rohatsch. He received his education in the Platte county schools. When a young man he enlisted in the Army in 1936 and served three years. When World War II broke out, he was called back into service and sent to Europe. He took part in the Normandy invasion and inthe battle of St. Lo. He then went on to help break the Sigfried line and drove to the Ruhr river. Here after several weeks of savage fighting, his company was supposed to get rest but the battle of the Bulge broke out and he was rushed back into that battle. Later he was with the first unit to cross the Ruhr river and then they fought their way to the Rhine. Lieutenant Rohatsch was seriously wounded on April 11, 1945 and was in the hospital when the war ended. He was a rrecipient of The Purple Heart, The Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster, The E.T.O. ribbon with five battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. He also received the Silver Star which was awarded (to him) for gallantry in action. When his companies were hard pressed by the enemy, he mounted the only tank left in his unit and he drove across an open field and attacked three enemy tanks which were firing on his men and he succeeded in driving the enemy tanks back. He arrived home from Europe in September, 1945. On March 27, 1946 he was united in marriage to Paula Jean Gertsch. In September 1950 he was stricken with polio and was completely paralized. He faced this affliction with great courage and faith which was an inspiration to those about him. Never complaining, he won the admiration of all by the courageous fight he made towards recovery. While still badly crippled, he accepted the position of Campaign Chairman for the polio drive in Platte County and his unselfish devotion to the cause was an inspiration to his assistants in every part of Platte County and through his efforts, a record collection was made. Thought still seriously handicapped he has been farming the past two years. His tractor upset and pinned him and he passed away almost instantly on Monday, Sept. 13, 1954, at the age of 41 years, two months and 20 days. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethern Church. He was preceded in death by his father, and one sister, Edna. Survivor list follows. Rohatsch, 42, who resides northwest of Monroe was killed late Monday afternoon in a tractor accident that occurred on a country road about two miles north of Monroe. According to county Attorney Byron Reed and State Trooper, Earl Dughman, who investigated, Rohatsch, was going north on the county road, pulling a farm trailer with his tractor, and upset after turning west at an intersection. Walter Schmidt of Monroe, who was approaching the intersection was not far away when the accident happened. He said that the tractor slipped over and came down upon Rohatsch and then "settled" letting the man partially pinned underneath. Schmidt hurried to the spot to pull Rohatsch free but it was too late. Rohatsch, who was partially disabled from an attack of polio some years ago, hit a sharp downgrade with his tractor and apparently started to slip from his seat, losing control as the wheels cramped. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Evangelical United Brethern church at Monroe. The deceased is a son of Mrs. Jos. Rohatsch and the late Joe Rohatsch former residents of this community, and a nephew of Phillip Rohatsch of this city.
