Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe. Prior to the funeral there will be a visitation beginning at noon. Memorials may be sent to the Mayflower Community, Grinnell, or the charity of your choice. Gene was born July 20, 1918, to Archie Bayard and Percy Bergeson Reisetter, near Radcliffe. He was the oldest of six children and grew up working hard onthe family farm during the Great Depression. He graduated from Ellsworth HighSchool in 1936. He married Lois Sylvia Reed, of Radcliffe, on July 8, 1940. A member of the Greatest Generation, Gene felt duty bound to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1943, leaving behind his 20-year-old wife and two daughters under two. He served in the infantry in Germany and received a Purple Heart as a result of wounds and a concussion from a tank explosion. After his discharge Gene and Lois farmed near Radcliffe and added a third daughter to their family. Then Gene and Lois decided to take advantage of the G.I. Bill. They moved their young family to a small farm near Ames, and Gene graduated from Iowa State University in 1955. After working for the U.S. Agricultural Extension Service in Oskaloosa, from 1955 to 1968, Gene returned to Iowa State where he earned his master's degree in 1972. He finished his working years with the U.S. Postal Service in Ames, retiring in 1983. Gene and Lois enjoyed their retirement years on Northwood Drive in Ames until they moved to the Mayflower Community in 2006. In addition to Lois, the love of his life and his wife for 70 years, Gene is survived by his three daughters: Jeananne Schild (Don), of Grinnell, Patricia Leith, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jane Conard (Rick Maneval), also of Salt Lake City, Utah;five granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren. The family thanks Gene and Lois' siblings and spouses for their loving support over the years: Thora Reisetter, Phyllis Reisetter, Cleone Reisetter, Joyce Reisetter Hughes, Howard and Naomi Reisetter and Arlene Reed and to caring nieces and nephews of the Reed and Reisetter families, to other friends of Gene and Lois, and to kind and compassionate caregivers at the Mayflower Community.
