In the infancy of Winston Cup/NASCAR racing, their teamwork, with Gene in the driver's seat, helped put the "Fabulous Hudson Hornet" into the spotlight. Gene's aggressive driving style put him into one of the most unusual actions in racing history, one that was echoed in the animated film "Cars," by the character voiced by Paul Newman, a Hudson look-alike and dirt track veteran. The incident occurred in the 1953 Southern 500 at Darlington. One of Gene's Hudson teammates, Herb Thomas, was in the lead just 10 laps from the finish line. At that point, his chances were killed by his car's blown engine. Gene positioned his Hornet behind Thomas's and pushed him around the speedway and across the line to finish in second place. This is not a unique feat in the annals of the Comstock brothers. Bob once ran out of the pit to change a flat tire during a race. Gene raced as Number 8 for several seasons, putting some miles on the number that would eventually settle with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 1952: Final standing: 21st Sprint, Martinsville: 19th 1953: Richmond 200, Virginia, 8th; Race 12 at Powell Motor Speedway, Ohio, 9th; Race 27, NC, 9th; Final standing: 18th Sprint, Martinsville: 23rd 1955 Southern 500, 48th, highest placing Hudson Gene's NASCAR years ran from 1950 to 1955, in which time he drove in 49 races, finished in the top five 1 time, top ten 6 times, and finished a total 3808.6 miles. Statistics have not been collected for all the types of racing in which Gene competed as a driver or as an owner, but few other people have spanned so many years of involvement in motor sports. Gene and his wife had two sons. ----Obituary---- Eugene H. Comstock, 70, of Chesapeake, owner and operator of Comstock Motors and Farm Machinery, died Sunday in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born February 21, 1910 in Red House, W.Va., a son of the late P.F. And Rebecca Reed Comstock. He started his career in 1925 with his father, opening Comstock Chevrolet at Chesapeake. He was an original member of and inspector for NASCAR. Comstock was nationally known for his auto racing career and the number eight that adorned his cars. He was a member of Windsor Grange and attended the Chesapeake First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Nannie Corbin Comstock; two sons, Edward Eugene Comstock of Casselberry, Fla. and Ted Robert Comstock of Chesapeake; three sisters, Mrs. Peggy Broughton of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Irene Thomas of Orlando, Fla. and Mrs. Francis Draoulac of Columbus; a brother, Ted R. Comstock of Lexington, Ky.; and one granddaughter, Joycelyn Ara Comstock of Chesapeake. One sister, Mrs. Louise Watson and two brothers, Robert Comstock and Harry Comstock, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Schneider Funeral Home, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Robert Love. Burial will be in Myrtle Ridge Cemetery at Linnville.
