Quickly promoted to engineer, he held that position until 1875, when he and his wife, Mary, became landlords of the Skinner House Hotel in Brooklyn, Iowa. For 25 years, under their management, the Skinner House became a well-known establishment on the railroad, renowned for its hospitality and meals.
