Eugene Huntington Passes Away Man prominent in Civil Life of State Succumbs After Month's Illness Aberdeen American, Oct. 25, 1913 Eugene Huntington of Webster, deputy internal revenue collector for the past fourteen years, a pioneer of Dakota, member of the territorial legislature and former adjutant general of the state, died last night at his home at Webster after a month's illness. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been announced. Eugene Huntington, of the eighth generation of descendants of Simon Huntington, the head of the original Huntington family in America, was born at Norwich, Conn., April 18, 1844. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horatio Huntington, moved to New Jersey when he was a child, later settling in the state of New York, and in 1856 moving to Mitchell County, Iowa, being among the early pioneers of that county. In 1861, shortly after the outbreak of the civil war, Mr. Huntington enlisted as a private in the Fourth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, with which regiment he served until the expiration of his enlistment in 1863. He immediately re-enlisted in the same troop and served through the balance of the war, being discharged with the rank of sergeant in August, 1865. After the war, Mr. Huntington returned to his home in Iowa, and in 1867 was employed in the engineering department of the Union Pacific Railway company, remaining with that road until he was given the position of construction engineer with the Illinois Central in 1869. In 1872 he served with the Iowa Pacific road in a similar capacity. In 1878 Mr. Huntington moved to South Dakota, locating in the real estate and loan business at Flandreau, being one of the first in that line in the territory. In 1883 he moved to Webster, where he has since resided, and where he continued in the real estate business for several years. He was elected a member of the territorial legislature in 1884-85, and during that session introduced a bill creating Marshall County, which bill was duly enacted into law. During the term of office of Governor Melette he was appointed adjutant general and carried out the duties of that rank in the most able and military manner. When Webster was incorporated as a village, Mr. Huntington was chosen as the first president of the village board of trustees. In 1899 he was appointed deputy internal revenue collector, which office he held with the utmost credit up to the time of his death. Mr. Huntington was a member of the local Masonic bodies, having attained the rank of the thirty-third degree. He was also active in G.A.R. circles in the state, and was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He was married to Miss Artemicia Button in Iowa on December 29, 1867, four children surviving the marriage, namely: Marcia, Richard, Grace, and Gertrude. Mr. Huntington was well-known in Aberdeen, his business and fraternal relations bringing him to this city a great deal during his thirty years residence in the territory and state. He leaves a large number of close and intimate friends to mourn his death.
