Honorary pallbearers were John Beamer, Antone Steidimayer, John Schleich, Victor Bonaly, D. Wigit and Jacob Fruchtenicht. Crique lived for 34 years at Grimes, later moving to the Arbuckle district. For the past year he has been staying at the Earl Myers ranch on the east side, near Colusa. He was born in the city of Hagenau, 18 miles north of the city of Strassbourg, Department of the Lower Rhine, Alsace, on the 10th of May 1855. He was left an orphan, with a younger brother, Emil, at the age of seven years. They were cared for by their grandmother for awhile, but finally were placed in private families for a time, later entering an orphanage in Strassbourg. Later their mother's cousin took them into the country where they grew up. At the age of 13 years Eugene was taken out of school and hired out on a farm. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War he offered his services and was accepted as interpreter of the company of artillery. He was always proud of wearing the uniform of the French at the age of fifteen years, being one of the youngest to wear the French uniform during the war. Crique took part in the battle of Woert Frochviller on the 6th day of August, which lasted thirteen hours, and missed being taken a prisoner of war by the Prussians by a mere chance. Afterwards he was enlisted by the Prussians with two horses and a wagon to haul provisions and ammunition. He was in camp six miles north of Strassbourg during the bombardment by the Germans. There were 300 Alsatian teamsters in camp. Afterwards he worked on different farms until 1873, when his uncle Antone Crique, invited them to come to California, which call came just in time, when he was contemplating escaping to France to escape Prussian military service. On the 24th day of March, 1874, they were refused a passport and on the 25th day of March they started out on foot at 4 a.m. and reached the first railroad station at 10 am. At noon they took the train for Avricourt which was the line between Alsace and France. They missed being captured by a Prussian guard by a foot. On the night of April 25, 1874, they arrived at Eddy's Landing in this county and Eugene Crique has lived in the county since. Crique worked for his uncle, Antone Crique, until he started farming for himself. On January 7, 1885, he was married to Mary Felton, by whom he had four children. In 1910 he sold his farm on Grand Island and moved to Arbuckle, buying a farm north of town, where he was engaged in the dairy business, delivering milk here for eighteen years. He introduced the milk bottle system into Arbuckle. Crique retired from the milk business at the age of 74, owing to sickness and old age. He was a devout member of the choir at Our Lady of Lourdes Church for 34 years. He also assisted in the choir of Holy Cross Church at Arbuckle on different occasions.
