Special to The Observer MONROE, May 4.--Eugene Ashcraft, for 15 years editor of The Monroe Enquirer, died this afternoon in the Duke hospital, Durham, where he had been for the last three weeks. Mr. Ashcraft had been a sufferer from diabetes for a good many years, and a month ago he was forced to give up his duties as editor to enter the hospital. It was found necessary to amputate his left leg above the knee, and ever since his condition had been critical. Mr. Ashcraft was 66 years old, the son of the late Maj. and Mrs. J. B. Ashcraft of Marshville township. He was married to Miss Sadie Bulla of Asheboro, who survives him, together, with a son, John B. Ashcraft, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles G. Napier, all of this county. As a young man, he became associated with his brother, the late Clegg Ashcraft, on The Monroe Enquirer. Upon his brother's death in 1921, he became editor of the paper. As editor, he exerted a large influence in the county's affairs. Funeral arrangements had not been made tonight, pending arrival of the immediate family who had been with him in Durham during his illness. The funeral probably will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by two brothers, T.
