Eugene Pius Young was born May 26, 1926, at Lightcap, S.D., to Frank and Mary (Hoegele) Young. He spent his early years growing up near Isabel, S.D. In 1936, his family moved to Aberdeen while he and his brother Phillip (ages 10 and 12) stayed alone to tend the livestock for several months. Eugene liked to tell stories about how he and Phil lived on eggs and beans and beans and eggs and even tried roasting a sparrow. In Aberdeen, Eugene attended school through the 9th grade but then quit because he was needed at home on the farm. He also started working at Hub City Livestock when he was 15 years old. Gene was inducted into the U.S. Army in May of 1951. On Oct. 28, 1951, he married Alice Rossow while she was visiting him in Springfield, Mo., at Fort Leonard Wood. A week later, Eugene was sent to Germany where he served in the highway patrol on the Autobahn until he came home in April of 1953. Eugene resumed working at Hub City Livestock, which he eventually bought in 1966 and later sold in 1990. He also farmed south of Aberdeen, growing corn and grain as well as raising thousands of pigs, sheep and cattle over the years, plus a few goats, horses, chickens, ducks, geese and one buffalo. Eugene served as president of the South Dakota Livestock Association. He was a Master Pork Producer in 1972, enabling him and Alice to join the Goodwill People-to-People Swine Delegation to the Far East, traveling to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Hawaii. His memory lives on with his three children and five grandchildren: Charlie and Nancy Whittlesey and their daughters, Elizabeth and Claire; Harlan and Lori Young and their sons, Eric and Lucas; and Donald Young and his son, Mason; his brothers: Phillip (Lucille) Young, Anthony Young, John Young and Richard Young; and his sisters: Mary Gutzwiller, Florence Brickey and Evelyn Hagen. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Young; his wife, Alice; his infant son, Roger Paul; his brothers, Francis and Leo; and his sister, Catherine Hagan.
