Leusink May 3, 1927 - December 22, 2014 Mr. Eugene Leusink, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2014, at the Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Eugene William was born on May 3, 1927, at Boyden, the son of John and Jane (Van De Hoef) Leusink. He was raised at Boyden and Matlock until 1937, when his family settled at Hull, where he graduated from high school. From 1945 to 1948, he was employed at Dykstra Produce in Rock Valley and at Van Engen Meat Market in Hull from 1948 to 1950. "Gene" then served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was with the 5th Regimental Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division, where he was awarded a Purple Heart and the Korean Service Medal. After his military service, he worked at Dykstra Produce in Hull until 1956. He then began a 39 year career with the Iowa State Bank in Hull. He was a teller and a cashier, retiring in 1995. On May 18, 1965, he married Alice Vande Stroet at the Bethany Reformed Church in Canton, South Dakota. They made their home in Hull. Alice passed away on June 23, 2008, in Rock Valley, after more than 43 years of marriage. He then moved to Rock Valley. Mr. Leusink was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also the treasurer for the catechism classes and the Men's Brotherhood for several years. He belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull. In addition, he was a service officer for the Salvation Army for five years and the treasurer for the Hull Business and Professional Club for eleven years. Eugene enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband and father, and most importantly, he loved the Lord Jesus Christ. Survivors include his two sons, John Leusink, and his wife, Angela, of Des Moines; and Alan Leusink, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a daughter and her husband, Amy and Stewart Krummen, of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Casey, Lewis and Andrew Krummen; and Alyson and Benjamin Leusink; and two sisters, Margaret Krommendyk, of Cherokee; and Grace Dykstra, of Hull. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerrit "Gary" John Leusink.
