He died Aug 3, 1989, at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan at age 58 years, one month and 16 days. He attended Jacksonville public grade school, and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1949. He was baptized at St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Read More	Harlan - Eugene Walter Stewart, the son of Walter and Vinonia (Steffusen) Stewart was born June 18, 1931, on a farm in Shelby County. He died Aug 3, 1989, at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan at age 58 years, one month and 16 days. He attended Jacksonville public grade school, and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1949. He was baptized at St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Dec 26, 1950, he entered the US Navy, serving his country as a Boatswain's Mate Third Class during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge on Nov 15, 1954, he returned to the Harlan area. Nov 23, 1955, he married Charlotte Rosenthal at St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Two daughters were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed south of Jacksonville. In 1970, they moved into Harlan, but he continued to farm until 1984, when he retired. In addition to being a member of St Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, he served on its parish council and as president in 1980. He was also active as an usher for many years. Other memberships include the National Rifle Association, the National Trappers Association and the Iowa Trappers Association. Surviving him in addition to his wife, Charlotte of Harlan; are two daughters, Trudy (Mrs Dale) Plagmann of Harlan and Elizabeth (Mrs Jerry) Schumacher of Breda; one grandson, David Plagmann; his parents, Walter and Vinonia Stewart of Harlan; one sisters, Marilyn (Mrs Delbert) Hinz of Harlan and other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated Monday, Aug 7, 1989 at St Michael's Catholic CHurch, Harlan with Rev Edward Kelly as the celebrant. Concelebranting was Bishop Leo Arkfeld and Rev Richard Wagner, assisted by Deacon Pat Davitt. Burial was in St Mary's cemetery, Portsmouth, with Owen Barry, Earl Doonan, Don Leuschen, Marvin Kenkel, Keith Anderson, and Gale Vandeberg serving as honorary casketbearers, serving as casketbearers were John Lajba, Tony Sondag, Francis Lajba, Dean Petersen, Dean Plagmann and John Schumacher.
