Read More	Eugene Wilhelm Emil WENDLING s/o Richard C. & Frieda S === Eugene Wendling of Ryan, the popular and energetic young automobile dealer, met a tragic death by drowning in the Maquoketa river near the Webber boat landing Tuesday afternoon. The young man, in company with John Gillman, Andrew Goen and Willie Malone, drove to the Webber landing and had crossed the river in a row boat. The boys left the boat on the west side of the stream and went in swimming. After some minutes in the water Mr. Wendlng decided to swim across the river, hoping to land at the Webber boat landing. When in mid-stream he apparently became exhausted and called for help. John Gillman and the other boys saw that Mr. Wendlling was in danger of drowning. Gillman at once started for him and when within a few feet of him saw the boy sink to his death. The boys made heroic efforts to bring the young man from the river, but were unable to do so until more help came. The body was taken from the bed of the river after some thirty minutes of hard work, and then for two hours physicians and friends worked hard in the hope that some faint spark of life might be aroused, and the young man's life saved. Eugene Wendling was born in Ryan July 11th, 1899, and spent all of his life in Ryan and Manchester. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Wendling, who, with two brothers - Rudolph and Albert, and one sister- Emma, survive him. Mr. Wendling was a natural-born auto salesman, and had been associated with his father in the automobile business for some time. He looked after the firm's interests in this part of the county, and was very successful as a salesman. He was a good-natured and pleasant mannered young man, and had made many friends while he was in Manchester. His tragic death is felt keenly by his friends in Manchester and comes as a crushing blow to the parents, and the brothers and sister. The remains were taken to the family home at Ryan Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at the family home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, and from the home the body will be taken to the Lutheran church where services will be held at 10:30. Rev. Eugene Melchert, pastor of the church, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in the Lutheran cemetery. Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - June 12, 1918
