Eunice Marie Balasa, the daughter of Edward and Gertrude (Orendorff) Herbig, was born in Marquette on Oct. 17, 1918, and passed away in Aurora on April 11, 2015, at the age of 96. She grew up on the family farm in the Marquette area, where she helped her parents on the farm. Eunice attended Pine Knott Country School and graduated from Marquette High School in 1936. She wrapped butter at the Farmers Union Creamery for five years and worked in AAA Farm Office for two years. When World War II broke out, Eunice went to work at the Harvard Air Base. Following the war, she went to work as the office manager at the Farmers Union Creamery. Eunice was united in marriage to Alphonse Joseph Balasa on Aug. 22, 1959, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aurora. After marrying, they moved to Fullerton and then the St. Edward area, where they farmed. They later moved to Marquette in 1971, where she was the cook at the school for several years. During the summer of 1973, they moved to Aurora, where they continued farming until retirement. Alphonse passed away on March 8, 2001. Eunice was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she taught CCD classes and was a member of Altar Society and served as a circle leader. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards and listening to polka music. Eunice also liked watching Nebraska football and professional golf on television. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Priscilla Balasa of Aurora; and two granddogs, Sally, 5, a standard poodle, and Hank, 11, a Basset Hound.
