She had been frail but stayed about the same until Friday morning when she felt badly. She passed away quietly in her sleep. Aunt Eva, as she was lovingly known, was the personification of all that was good, kind, gentle, and was a lovely lady. Those who cared for her at the Brown county (sic) hospital (sic) where she made her home for over three years, say she was the best patient in every way that the hospital has ever had. She was much loved by her family, friends and neighbors and she especially was loved by children for her interest in them. Her memory will live in the lives of all who knew her. Eva Dicie Schmitt, daughter of Elvira and Henry Lyman, was born at Watseeka (sic), Illinois. September 28, 1962. She, as a small girl came with her parents from Illinois to live at White Cloud. After living in that town for a short while they moved to a farm. She was married on May 1, 1881 to Jacob Schmitt. For a short while following their marriage they were engaged in farming, and after a short time moved into Fairview where Mr Schmitt operated a barbershop. Five children were born to them, the four surviving are: Charles and Frank of Fairview; Lloyd of Liberty, Mo., and Howard of Topeka. There are two grandsons, Keith and Gene, sons of Lloyd; one great grand daughter and one great grandson, children of Keith Schmitt. Mrs. Eva Schmitt was the last of her family, her husband, two sisters and five brothers preceding her in passing. She was a member of First E and R church (sic) for over fifty years, and has been a very active member of that organization. For two years she had been confined to her room at the Brown County Hospital. Before that she lived in her own home in Fairview ably caring for herself with the good assistance of her children. She was a willing helper in her church; and a great home lover, taking great pride in the keeping of a home. The fact that she had attained to a good age in life, never became self-suggestive that she was what one would term as "old". She was always young in thoughts, enjoying every moment of life. The very nature of her character, the calm, warm appearance upon her face spoke tones of love-love for life, truth and beauty. She was a lover of flowers, and as one of her sons put, she could touch a flower and it would grow, seeming as though the spirit of her God self-penetrated into the life stream of the plant. Mrs. Schmitt while in her home, or a patient at the County Hospital, was a most cheery, appreciative and naturally kind person with whom to visit. She enjoyed company and neighbors and they loved her. And so a host of relatives and friends survive to remember and receive into their own hearts the goodness and kindnesses of Mrs Schmitt. She was 91 years, 4 months and 25 days old. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, March 1, at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Fairview with the pastor, Rev. Harold Schulz in charge. Mrs. Ralph Woldt and Alonzo Lambertson sang "Does Jesus Care" and "Old Rugged Cross" and Mr Lambertson sang "Sunrise" as a solo. Mrs Merle Fish was the organist. Mrs E.C. Geiger, Mrs Pearl Tulk and Mrs Frank Littrell cared for the beautiful floral offering. Body bearers were E.W. Schofield, Will Rogers, Ralph Woldt, PaulBanks, Ivan Chadwell and A.E. Maschewski. Interment was made in the Isely cemetery (sic).
