Born the daughter of a hard-working German family who had migrated to Russia to farm the land under promises made by Catherine the Great, Eva Herdt would soon leave the land of her nativity for the promise of life in America. The political changes brought about by the Russian socialists under Trotsky and Lenin, and the physical harshness and demands of the Volga country, resulted in many of the Volga Germans seeking refuge in America. It was about this same time another Volga German, Gottlieb Scholl, Sr., also came to the new world and the promise of America. Their story is born in the harshness of the old world and promise of the new. Pooling what little money the family had, the Herdts, with their newborn daughter, made the voyage to America in 1912. Arriving in the shadow of the Statute of Liberty at Ellis Island, as tens of thousands of immigrants had done before, the family eventually made their way across America to Nebraska to join other German immigrants. It was outside of Scott's Bluff, Nebraska, that they began their new life as an industrious farm family, much as they had done previously in Russia. It was there, on the wind-swept prairie of Nebraska, that Eva would experience her childhood. She would grow-up in a strict German home where she was the second of eleven children. Her family attended the Evangelical Lutheran church and took part in the various conferences the church provided. It was at such a religious conference that Eva Herdt would eventually meet another young Volga German by the name of Gottlieb Scholl. At the age of 16, young Eva attended a prayer meeting that was conducted by several young men from Chicago. These men spoke of the gospel and the need for salvation through Jesus Christ. It was at this meeting that Eva surrendered her life to Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. This was an event that would characterize the remainder of her life. In the summer of 1936, Eva Herdt's life would dramatically change in just a few short months. Her father, Adam Herdt, was the Secretary of the Christian German Brotherhood that periodically offered religious meetings among the German communities in the region. One of these meetings took Mr. Herdt, and his young daughter Eva, to Nisland, South Dakota where another settlement of German immigrants was located. It was 4th of July weekend, 1936 when young Eva caught the attention of another young attendee, Gottlieb Scholl. What begin as a simple walk along the irrigation systems of the beet fields blossomed into correspondence as the young lady from Nebraska, and the young man from South Dakota, exchanged letters. A few months later, and recognizing their mutual attraction, young Gottlieb traveled to Nebraska to ask her father for her hand in marriage. Their humble courtship that consisted of only two personal meetings, and the exchange of letters, culminated in marriage on Thanksgiving Day, 1936 in Nisland, South Dakota. The newlyweds began their new life in a small farmhouse not far from Gottlieb's parents. Gottlieb and Eva would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. In 1938, Gottlieb and Eva moved briefly back to Nebraska to be closer to the Herdt family. It was during the years that followed that Eva gave birth to their first son, Mel. Gottlieb worked the land before heading west to California. In 1941, the Scholl family arrived in Los Angeles. With World War on the horizon, Gottlieb sought work in the emerging Aerospace industry in southern California, initially sweeping floors for Lockheed in Burbank, California before moving on to the aircraft assembly line. It was during these years that Eva gave birth to their second son, Tom. The young family struggled in those years and eventually Gottlieb could not resist that ancestral calling of the land and returned to South Dakota to farm. His strong ability with the land kept him from the War as his farming abilities were recognized by those on the draft board. Eva was spared the agony of many wives in that tumultuous period of American history. Life in South Dakota was temporary as the couple again returned to southern California as the land of opportunity. This time, Gottlieb found employment delivering produce in the Burbank-North Hollywood area. At the insistence of Eva, the young couple began attending Calvary Church of the Valley in North Hollywood. In June 1950, Gottlieb Scholl, like Eva before, was confronted with the gospel and the claims of Jesus Christ. At that time he surrendered to Christ and his life took on new direction and meaning. It was during this phase of their lives that Eva gave birth to their third son, Michael. In the late-50s, the family moved once again from the San Fernando Valley to the high desert region of southern California. Using the proceeds from the sale of their home, Gottlieb bought a chicken farm outside Palmdale, California. The family attended a small church, Littlerock Bible Church, during this period of their lives. They eventually moved from the high desert to the San Gabriel mountain community of Wrightwood. While Gottlieb worked for a general contractor as a finishing carpenter, Eva continued to maintain their home. The family was now grown and Eva's life was taking new directions. Following their time in Wrightwood, Eva and Gottlieb moved again – this time to the northern California community of Paradise. While Gottlieb operated a small cabinet shop, Eva kept busy by offering her support to her entrepreneurial husband and by raising several foster children. For five years the Scholls enjoyed their stay in "Paradise", however, Gottlieb's health, aggravated by working conditions in the woodshop, forced the family to seek other employment. Moving was again on the horizon. The draw of the Midwest again pulled the Scholl's east, this time bringing Eva and Gottlieb to Warren, Ohio where he found employment in a steel factory. It was a short episode in their lives, but an enjoyable period. Together, Eva and Gottlieb scraped together a small savings from his work in the mill and again decided to move – this time back to California. Their second son, Tom, had moved to Humboldt County with his family in the early 1970s. Eva and Gottlieb decided to join them there. After a brief stay in Fortuna, Eva and Gottlieb purchased a home in Rio Dell. It was here that Gottlieb would retire. On October 22, 2001 Eva made one final move as she passed into the presence of her Lord under the watchful eye of her loving husband. Eva's move was blessed by Gottlieb who gently kissed her forehead and stated "Ok God, you can have your angel back." Eva Scholl is survived by her husband, Gottlieb Scholl, her three sons, Mel, Tom, and Michael, seven grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. By Dr. Greg Behle
