Description	:	Eva Julia Kempf was born July 30, 1909, near Mound City, and was the first born of Jacob and Magdalena (Vollmer) Wessel's 13 children. Eva was baptized and confirmed in a small Lutheran Church near Mound City. She grew up in the Mound City-Pollock area and attended the rural Hillside School, where she obtained an eighth grade education. Read More	Eva Julia Kempf was born July 30, 1909, near Mound City, and was the first born of Jacob and Magdalena (Vollmer) Wessel's 13 children. Eva was baptized and confirmed in a small Lutheran Church near Mound City. She grew up in the Mound City-Pollock area and attended the rural Hillside School, where she obtained an eighth grade education. In the early 30s, the family was ferried across the Missouri River at Pollock to settle in Corson County. As a young woman, Eva worked in Mobridge and Bullhead, as well as on farms in Corson and Campbell counties. She spent two years of the Great Depression in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Eva and Rudolph Kempf were married Oct. 19, 1939, and made their home 10 miles north of Timber Lake. It was there that they raised their family of four children. They lived there for 44 years until Rudolph's death in 1985. She then lived in Mobridge for two years before returning to Timber Lake to live at the Timber Lake Manor. In February of 2004, following a short stay with her son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Sylvia Kempf in Lincoln, Neb., she moved to the Beverly Healthcare Center in Mobridge. She died there at the center on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at the age of 96. Despite the years of work and hardships, Eva filled her spare time with work in her community in addition to being a caring mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Timber Lake, was a longtime member of the Prairie Pals Extension Club, and a leader of the Shining Star 4-H Club. She babysat for many neighborhood children and offered a haven to children on their way home from the country school two miles from her home. Eva was always a good hostess and did what she could to make any visitor feel welcome. "It was a trait that she kept to the very end of her day," said a relative. "She was adored by her children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and a host of family and friends." Eva loved to travel and it didn't matter if it were near or far, for a short or extended time, or if it were to visit old friends and relatives. She was always ready to go and took pride in having seen a lot of country for a woman of simple means. She made two trips to Australia where her daughter Arlis lives, and had visited nearly 40 states. She leaves her four children, Norman (Sylvia) Kempf of Lincoln, Vern (Lynn) Kempf of Chardon, Ohio, Arlis Kempf of Melbourne, Australia, and Naden Kempf of Mitchell; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Oscar (Barbara) Wessel of Pierce, Ariz.; and four sisters, Martha Kluckman of Pollock, Emma Jordeth of Minneapolis, Minn., Pauline (Bill) Wendt of Mobridge and Betty Browning of Mobridge. In addition to her husband, five brothers, two sisters and her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services for Eva were this morning, Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Pastor Paul Schulz officiated. Barb Naumann was organist. Hymns sung were "On Eagles Wings," "Beautiful Savior" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Casketbearers were Lance Kempf, Glenn Kempf, Reed Kempf, Lowell Kempf, Taylor Wegner and Rick Avery. Burial was in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
