Eva Schmitt was born in Marsh, Mont., on July 13, 1917, to Fred and Christina (Gaub) Kaul. She was baptized on Aug. 19, 1917, and confirmed in the Christian faith on June 7, 1931. Eva married Edwin Schmitt, originally of Mott, N.D., on Oct. 5, 1940; they were married for nearly 65 years until his death in 2005. Survivors include four children: Del (Betty), Spokane, Wash.; Marilyn (Robert) Herz, Rapid City, S.D.; Gordon (Judy), Glendive, Mont.; and Vicki (Brent) Carstens, Billings. A daughter, Evelyn Mohr, was called to her heavenly home in 1987. Eva is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a brother, Oswald (Olga) Kaul of Vancouver, Wash. Her parents, four sisters and five brothers also preceded her in death. Eva found great joy in serving her Lord through the work of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, quilting with her church friends, welcoming newcomers to her church, and earlier in her life, teaching Sunday school and singing in choir. In recent years, she again enjoyed playing the harmonica as she had done in her youth. "Grandma Great" loved being with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids, making them cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies, and supplying them with quilts and crocheted "scrubbies." Public visitation will be Sunday, June 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel downtown, 925 S. 27th St. Services will be held Monday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Billings with Pastor David Preus officiating. Burial will take place at 10 a.m. at Terrace Gardens Cemetery, Billings, MT., prior to the service at the church. A memorial has been established to further the Gospel work of The Lutheran Hour Radio Ministry, of which she and Ed were faithful listeners, www.lutheranhour.org.
