Our energetic, loving, independent Eva Gartner, 92, of Pittsburg, peacefully passed at Via Christi Hospital. Born in Franklin, KS, on January 28, 1921, to Jules and Blanche Louise (Pommier) Richard, she attended Franklin grade school and graduated from Arma High School in 1939. She lived in Franklin until 1968, when she moved to Pittsburg, where she has since resided. Mrs. Gartner worked in the Crawford County Welfare Department from 1941-1947. She was secretary to the Registrar at Pittsburg State University from 1955 until retirement in 1986. She learned to tole paint in 1990, and received honorable mention for a painting at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Other interests included sewing, crocheting, painting, quilt making and working in the yard and garden. She made her first quilt in 1997, and won first place at the Balkans Quilt Show in the novice division in 1998. On June 14, 1980, she was united in marriage to Joe Gartner. He preceded her in death on February 3, 2003. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and served in many capacities. She was a member of PSU Retired Employees, Eastern Star—Pittsburg Chapter (and formerly Arma and Girard), and the Arma Red Hats. Mrs. Gartner is survived by one brother, Jules Richard Jr. of rural Arma, a daughter, Linda Montee Russell of Dallas, TX, three step-daughters, Kathy Lamb of Hepler, Vera Wright of Topeka, and JoAnn Bailey of Leesburg, FL, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Della Peternell. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday (January 18) at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery. Eastern Star Rites will be given at 6:45 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends following the rites until 8:00 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m., Thursday, to sign the register book. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Grace United Methodist Church or your favorite charity is preferred. These may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Site has photo. ~~ Her 2nd husband: Joseph 'Joe' Gartner* 07 February 1913 ~ 03 February 2002 Joe Gartner, 89, of Pittsburg, died at 6:55 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born Feb. 7, 1913, at Franklin, to Jacob and Louisa Mae Semmerneg Gartner. He attended Franklin schools. He also attended Pittsburg State University, where he studied cabinet making. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in the Pittsburg area most of his life. He married Eva Louise Richard Montee on June 14, 1980, at Pittsburg. She survives of the home. Mr. Gartner worked in the coal mines and at Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. He retired in 1978. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans. Additional survivors include four daughters, JoAnn Bailey of Holiday, Fla., Vera Lee Wright of Topeka, Kathy Lynn Lamb of Farlington and Linda Russell of Dallas; four brothers, Louis Gartner of Altamont, Eddie Gartner of Parsons, Frank Gartner of Pittsburg and Jack Gartner of Independence; one sister, Sophie Zieber of Independence, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Steve Cole officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post No. 64 will provide flag-folding ceremonies. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary, 114 E.
