Washington Evening Journal 7 Apr 1908 Pg 4 "HIS 91ST BIRTHDAY William Essley Celebrates Birthday Anniversary Today, at His Home in this City AN OLD RESIDENT Came to this County in 1840 and has been a Resident of this City for Over 30 Years. William Essley, of East Jefferson street, is celebrating his ninety first birthday anniversary today. All his children, A. H. Essley and Mrs. I.J. Eichelberger, of this place, and Mrs. Eva Cocklin, of Ainsworth, besides a large number of other relatives were present to help make this occasion an enjoyable one. Besides the children, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren were present. At the noon hour a splendid repast was served by the ladies of the company, and this was certainly not the least enjoyable feature of the day. Mr. Essley carries his years well, and is bright and active for a man of his age. To illustrate his activeness, Mr. Essley is able to lie flat on the floor and raise himself without the aid of his hands, a feat that is unusual for a man of ninety-one years. Mr. Essley has lived continuously in Washington since 1840, and has been a resident of this city for over thirty years. Mr. Essley came to this county in the fall of 1839, and entered land six miles south of town, and this is still owned by the Essley family. He then returned to New Boston, Ill., where he had left his wife and one son. A. H . and spent the winter there. In the spring of 1840 a party composed of Mr. and Mrs. William Essley and son. A. H., Mr. and Mrs. John Essley and two children, Mr. and Mrs. Ab Custer and six children, Mr. and Mrs. Thyrus McMillan and two children, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Beeves and two children, and Mr. and Mrs. John Iams and three children crossed the Mississippi and settled in this county. Many of the members of this party will be remembered by the older residents of this community. William Essley and son, A. H., are the only members of the party who are living today. After coming to this county, at one election time Mr. Essley drove back to Indiana to vote for General Harrison, who had served during the war of 1812 with Mr. Essley’s father. For many years after coming to this city, Mr. Essley was actively engaged in business. For three years he owned a grocery, and for more than twenty-one years the was the proprietor of the hotel on South Marion avenue known by many still as the "Essley House”. He is one of the best known men in Washington county, and is held in high esteem. As a reminder of this happy affair today, the relatives at the celebration presented him with a handsome rocking chair. Mrs. Southworth of Galesburg, was the guest from out of the city.
