"Funeral services were held Friday, September 25th for Mrs. Eva Phelps at the Methodist church in Lexington at 2:30 p.m., Rev. J. J. Sheaff, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery. "Eve Elizabeth Phelps, daughter of Wm. and Suzan Elizabeth Salisbury, was born at Lapeer, Mich., August 29, 1859. She departed this life on September 21, 1942, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Patterson, of Cozad, Nebr., having reached the age of 83 years and 23 days. "In the year 1875 she was married to Samuel Gifford Hammond, and they moved to Kansas in 1878. In 1888 the family moved to Arapaho, Nebraska. "To this union were born five sons, Charley, Elmer, Bert, Ray and Earl. Ray passed away at the age of 13 years. Mr. Hammond died in January, 1889. In the year 1892 she was united in marriage to George Phelps. To this union two children were born, Mamie and Edward George. Mr. Phelps died on August 26, 1902. "In 1904, Mrs. Phelps, upon the profession of her faith was baptised and united with the Baptist church. After moving to Lexington in 1909, she joined the Methodist church, and was a faithful member until her death. "As long as her health and strength would permit, she maintained a deep interest in the work of the church, and delighted to talk about the fundamentals of her faith. Mrs. Phelps maintained a keen interest in world events, and read extensively to keep herself informed. "In addition to her children she leaves to mourn her death, two sisters, Mrs. Rena Cypher, Flint, Mich., and Mrs. Bessie Salisbury, Oklahoma City, Okla., a niece Mrs. Evelyn Davey, Peabody, Kansas, also two stepdaughters, Mrs. Jennie Thorndike, and Mrs. Downey, both of Cambridge, Nebr. There are also thirteen grandchildren and twenty one great-grandchildren."
