He was alone in the plane. It was not known at press time where Tweedy was bound when the crash occurred. Sedgwick County Sheriff Johnnie Darr said a witness told authorities the single-engine plane was flying at a low altitude when it narrowly missed a house northeast of Wichita, then plowed into a wheat field behind a nearby building at about 4 p.m. Darr said the cause of the crash remained undetermined, but the Federal Aviation Administration was called in to investigate. County Fire Chief Gary Nichols said the plane apparently did not lose power before slamming into the field. A portion of the wing on the plane hit the field first, then the nose of the aircraft burrowed into the ground, he said. The wreckage was strewn over a 300 square foot area and the victim was thrown about 100 feet from the plane. Darr said his office didn’t know Tweedy’s destination, although he was headed southwest at the time of the crash. Tweedy was born on Dec. 13, 1925 in Altoona and came to Iola with his parents at an early age. He graduated from Iola High School in 1943 and served in the Merchant Marine in World War II. In 1949 he and John Coleman started the Iola Ready Mix Concrete Company. He had been sole owner for the past 10 years. He was a member of the first Christian Church, was past head of the Iola Elks Lodge and had served as district deputy of the lodge. He was a past president of the Kansas Ready Mix Association and was on the association board of directors at the time of his death. Tweedy was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Bronson. Surviving are his wife, Frances; two sons, Lindsey and Steven, both of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Mark Dubois, Topeka; a brother, Grover, Coon Rapids, Minn.; a sister Mrs. Lloyd Zajic, Rogers, Ark., and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Jerry Ray Galbreath officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials in his name be given to the Kansas Elks Training Center in Wichita.
