Evan Hutchens, who lived northwest of the city, and had been a resident of the community since 1893, died unexpectedly at his home at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, following an apparent heart attack. Born March 31, 1879 in Berry County, Mo., he was the son of Charles Hutchens and Ruth Ellen Davis Hutchens. He came to the Arkansas City community as a boy of 14 to work on a farm east of the city. Later he worked for Orland Dillow and married his daughter, Ethel Dillow, Sept. 31, 1906 at Hackney. She died April 3, 1922. He later married Dela Morgan of Arkansas City, March 6, 1944, at Newkirk. Farming all his life, he retired 18 years ago and with his wife and son, Delbert Morgan, had lived three miles east and a half mile north of the Martha Washington school, in his own house on the farm owned by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dowler. Hutchens was of the Quaker faith. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rosetta) Dowler, rural Arkansas City, Mrs. Guy (Ella Frances) Beebee, El Reno, Okla., one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Addie Hutchens, 526 North C street, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-sons, S.G. Morgan, Rowton, Okla., and Delbert Morgan of the home; two step-daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Veva) Dunn, Belton, Mo., and Mrs. Raymond (Audrey) Poore, Peck, and 12 step grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday, 2:30 p.m., in the Erdman-Oldroyd Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Don Swaim will officiate and burial will be in the Hackney cemetery.
