Evelyn Mary Althoff was born May 2, 1919, to Simon and Ella (Gramberg) Althoff on a farm in Morton Township, Day County. She was baptized at the Norwegian Lutheran Church (Our Savior's) in Waubay. Burial will be at a later date in the Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Evelyn Mary Althoff was born May 2, 1919, to Simon and Ella (Gramberg) Althoff on a farm in Morton Township, Day County. She was baptized at the Norwegian Lutheran Church (Our Savior's) in Waubay. The family lived on various farms in Day County and Roberts County. She attended country school in Waubay Township and then lived and helped on her parents' farm. Sept. 29, 1943, she married Rudolph Pies in Waubay. After their marriage, they made their home in Ortley Township, Roberts County and were engaged in beef, dairy and grain farming. They retired from active farming in 2001. Her husband died in January of 2009 and after his death, she lived with her daughter, Maxine Niles. She enjoyed milking cows, collecting rocks, sewing, collecting recipes, riddles, wise sayings, Bible verses and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dale and Daniel. Survivors include three sons, Gerald (Faye) Pies, Delwin (Ann) Pies and Darrell (Bonnie) Pies, all of Waubay; five daughters, Maxine (Harlow) Niles of Waubay, Laurel (Duane) Pehl of Barnard, Sharon Junso of Milbank and Diane (Terry) Anderson and Darlene Olson, both of Ortley; five brothers, Eugene (Oriet) Althoff of Webster, Duane (Barbara) Althoff of Ortley, Clarence Althoff of Yankton and Virgil (Gaila) Althoff and Earl (Serine) Althoff, both of Waubay; three sisters, Marie (Dave) Leppin of Salem, OR, Dorothy (Lloyd) Pies of Sisseton and Verna Knapp of Waubay; 28 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
