Our dear mother, friend, and confident passed in peace Monday, January 16th, 2006. Mother was born on Happy Hill, WA, to Bertie and Bernhart Garigen on October 1, 1912. From her earliest years, life was filled with many joys and challenges. She lost her mother at seven and Grandpa raised three children by maintaining a small ranch and starting an auto agency in the Okanogan Valley. At the age of 15, Gari graduated from High School, got on a bus and finished Business College in Seattle. Her life was full of adventure, travel, sharing, care-taking, nurturing and love. Mother's first meeting of dad, Richard H. Storch (who in later years always signed as T.O.M., "Tired Old Man"), was in a baby contest. Dad was from Omak and Mother from Okanogan. Mother said dad was the "prettier baby", and that's why he won the prize! Later mother and dad dated in their teens and their paths continued to cross. Dad graduated from the University of Idaho in 1936, in mining engineering, and went to Alaska to explore for gold. They kept an active correspondence. In 1938, dad asked mother to marry. She packed her belongings and headed to the Alaska Territory. Dad met her at the dock and they were married that evening by the Justice of Peace in Anchorage. Her diaries are full of wonderful stories, filled with adventure. Mother always kept her pride and dignity, humility, loyalty, generosity, kindness, and courage throughout her life. In 1941, she flew from Fairbanks to give birth to her first child in Omak. Six weeks later, on her return trip, the plane lost power, and the bush pilot, mother and baby were forced to land on a river gravel bar. They all survived the wreck, mother finding out later she suffered broken ribs, the baby sleeping through the ordeal. They lived in Jack Wade until the War broke out, returning to the lower 48 States, and eventually retiring in Clarkston, WA. From there they had an opportunity to travel throughout the Orient, Australia and New Zealand. With dad's passing in 1993, mother returned to live in Spokane. Later Mother and daughter, Jo, would spend time traveling in London, Scotland, China and Japan. The most special adventures were going "home" to the Okanogan Valley, Happy Hill and exploring Eastern Washington with mother reliving her childhood memories. Mother is survived by, daughter, Jo and husband Bill Fyfe, son, Richard G. and daughter-in-law, Anne Storch, and two grandchildren, Amy Jo Fyfe, and James William Fyfe and his wife Jennifer, daughter Taylor and her first great- grandchild "Gavin", and many nieces and nephews. The family extends special thanks to Hospice of Spokane and all her caregivers for their collective love and support. Vasser-Rawls, of Lewiston, ID, handled the Funeral Arrangements; Gravesite services, lead by Reverend Father Jake Morton, S.J. was held January 20th in Okanogan Cemetery. The family requests that Memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Spokane.
