She was the wife of Harry Smith Potterfield, who died in 1967. She was the wife of Harry Smith Potterfield, who died in 1967. Born April 13, 1904, on the farm of her parents near Lovettsville, Va., she the youngest of seven children of Henry Harrison and Rose Virts Nisewaner. Mrs. Potterfield spent her youth attending Mount Olivet Methodist Church and Loudoun County public schools. When she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1922, she moved to Washington, where she attended Strayer's Business College. Upon graduating in 1923, she obtained a secretarial position with the U.S. Postal Service. After her marriage in 1924, Mrs. Potterfield relocated to Lovettsville and became a member of St. James United Church of Christ, where she sang soprano in the church choir until 1967. She was also an active member of a church women's group, the Might Society. The society was well-known for its community Thanksgiving dinners that fed many Lovettsville residents and visitors in the 1930s and 1940s. She also actively participated in the Lovettsville Home Demonstration Club. Upon the death of her husband, she relocated to Warrenton, Va., where she was a volunteer for many years at the Fauquier Memorial Hospital and regularly attended St. James Episcopal Church. In 1995, she relocated to the Imperial Plaza Apartments in Richmond. Mrs. Potterfield considered herself to be a "Loudouner" and possessed a great knowledge of the families and history of Loudoun County. Until shortly before her death, she carried on substantial correspondence on these topics with individuals around the United States. Surviving are one daughter, Betty Sue Tyler and husband Ned of Warrenton; one son, Tom Potterfield and wife Ruth of Savannah, Ga.; five granddaughters, Susannah Tyler of Orange, Va., Roxanne Dinncan and husband Dennis of Warrenton, Elizabeth Feldmann and husband Gregory of Roanoke, Va., Elizabeth Hiers and husband Jerry of New Orleans, and Evelyn Roemhildt and husband Thomas of Richmond; one grandson, Tyler Potterfield Richmond; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Potterfield will also be remembered by his grandson Tyler's fiancee, Maura Meinhardt of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at St. James United Church of Christ, 10 E. Broadway, Lovettsville, with the Rev. Roland England officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Lovettsville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Church of Christ, 10 E. Broadway, Lovettsville, Va. 20180.
