Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, January 10, 2014 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Burial follows at the Eureka Cemetery. Ushers will be Lloyd Miller and Duane Wanner, a high school classmate of Evelyn's. Visitation begins 5:00 pm Thursday at Lien-Straub Chapel with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service. Evelyn Katharina Knapp, daughter of Katharina (Spitzer) and Fredrich Knapp, was born at the Knapp homestead eight miles east and 2 ½ miles north of Eureka on June 18, 1937. She attended rural school and Eureka High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. Evelyn married Delbert Scheuffele on October 14, 1956 at Long Lake, SD. They first settled in Long Lake and, in 1963, relocated to a farm south of Eureka. In 1965, they moved into Eureka where Evelyn lived the rest of her life. After moving to town Evelyn was employed various places. She worked as a nurse's aide at the Lutheran Home and was also employed at the Jack and Jill Grocery Store and the Red Owl Grocery Store. The last 13 years of her life, she was employed at the Eureka Senior Citizens Center. Evelyn was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church, served on the German Schmeckfest Committee for many years, and acted in several community plays. She was creative and made quilts for each of her grandchildren when they graduated from high school. Evelyn also enjoyed and was very willing to dress like a clown for various functions. Evelyn is survived by three sons—Craig (Doris) Scheuffele and Rickey (Cindy) Scheuffele of Aberdeen and Fred (Angie) Scheuffele of Wagner; one daughter Robin Mailloux of Aberdeen; two brothers-Edwin Knapp of Indianapolis, IN and George Knapp of Greenwood, IN; two sisters—Frances Oster of Coeur d'Alene, ID and Luella Pride of Yakima, WA; seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and nine step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father on March 11, 1969, her mother on April 15, 1978, her husband on June 14, 2004, one brother, three sisters, one grandson, and one step grandson. Honorary bearers will be Evelyn's grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her neighbor, Tim Jundt and his family. Casketbearers will be Evelyn's nephews, George Weisser of Leola, Charles Weisser of Frederick, Allen Heinrich, Don Heinrich, John Hilgemann, and Wesley Hilgemann all of Eureka. Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements. ∼Born in rural McPherson County, South Dakota, died in a vehicle accident near Ipswich, Edmunds County, South Dakota, daughter of Fredrich Knapp and Katharina Spitzer, married October 14, 1956, at Long Lake, McPherson County, South Dakota, to Delbert Scheuffele.
