Description	:	Evelyn, 83, of Leslie Township, was called home to heaven on September 29, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer, under the loving care of her family and hospice. She was born at home in Tompkins Township to Laurence and Eva Marie (Teachout) Wood. A lifelong resident of the Leslie area, she graduated from Leslie High School in 1956. Read More	Evelyn, 83, of Leslie Township, was called home to heaven on September 29, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer, under the loving care of her family and hospice. She was born at home in Tompkins Township to Laurence and Eva Marie (Teachout) Wood. A lifelong resident of the Leslie area, she graduated from Leslie High School in 1956. She married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Ruthig, who preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage. They settled on a farm in Leslie where together they raised their family of 5 children. She later married Paul H. Wood who also preceded her in death. Along with being a farm wife and mother, Evelyn attended Jackson Junior College (now Jackson College) earning her LPN Certificate. She continued her education and in 1991 became a Registered Nurse. She began her 42 plus year nursing career caring for patients at Mercy Hospital in Jackson, working through the hospital merger, and retiring at age 70 from W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital (Henry Ford Allegiance Health). Evelyn had a deep faith and happily shared her love for God with others. She was a charter member of the Northwest Baptist Church especially enjoying the church’s Shoebox Ministry. In her free time, she enjoyed needlework and sewing, gardening, and entertaining. She was a wonderful hostess and would welcome anyone to her table. Evelyn will be remembered as being a caring person by her family, patients, church family, and guests. Along with her parents and husbands, Evelyn is preceded in death by her sons, William Ruthig and Milton Ruthig; grandsons Jonathan Ruthig and Mackenzie Ruthig; step-daughter, Mary (Wood) Drake; and brother, William Wallace Wood. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dwayne (Jan) Ruthig, Wilma (Paul) Haas, and Donald (Corrina) Ruthig; daughter-in-law, Myra Ruthig; step-son, Mike (Chris) Wood; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sisters-in-law, Carol Wood and Mary Hector. A funeral service honoring Evelyn’s life will be held on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Northwest Baptist Church, Jackson, MI. with Pastor Hal Jankusky officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, October 4, at the church and also one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Northwest Baptist Church Shoebox Ministry. Arrangements entrusted to Vickers Leslie Funeral Home, Leslie, MI.
