She was 19 and had never been married. Clifford was 26, and had been married and divorced from Emma Ziegenfuss, a short marriage that no children were born to. In the summer of 1917, a daughter Grace Irene, was born to the couple. Grace was 2 months premature, and was "taken by instruments," which left her with spastic paralysis and delayed development. These days we would diagnose cerebral palsy and provide therapy. In those days, they kept her home and called her "feeble minded". She never went to school. In September 1919 (some sources say 1918, but I think that is wrong), a son, Edward, was born to the couple. I have not learned much about him, but according to the social security death index, he died 29 Dec 2006. In January of 1920, the family was living on Puget Island, with Clifford's mother Amelia and stepfather David Huddleston (actually the relationships are a bit more complicated than that, but that's how the census has it ). On 25 May 1920, Evelyn died at the Fort Steilacoom asylum (now Western State Hospital). In 1930, Clifton has married, divorced and remarried Myrtle Cline, is living on Puget Island with Edward, his son, Louis Brooks, Myrtle's son, and 3 daughters born to the marriage. Irene (Grace Irene) is living nearby with Amelia's daughter Grace and her husband James Alexander. David is also living in that household. Amelia died early in 1930. David died in 1932. On 13 Dec 1935, Irene was admitted to the Eastern State Custodial School at Medicine Lake, when she was 17 years old. The precipitating event for this was probably the divorce of Grace and James Alexander, and the unwillingness of Clifford and Myrtle to care for her. In her commitment papers it states that her great great grandmother on her mother's side was insane, and that her own mother died insane at the state hospital in Tacoma. It also states the family's economic condition as "have nothing." On 24 September 1942, Irene died at Eastern State. I do not know where she is buried. Clifford died in 1946 in Pacific County, and is buried at Ilwaco. Myrtle died in 1976 and is also buried in Ilwaco, as is Lewis Brooks (Myrtle's son) and William Ervin (another of David's stepsons). My mother remembered going out to Puget Island as a child, and mentioned David, Amelia, Clifford, Myrtle, and Grace and James. Even though she was just a couple of months older that Irene, I had never heard of her in our family until I started going through courthouse files in Cathlamet this year.
