Description	:	Evelyn Cassel, 95, of Lincoln and formerly of Ainsworth, died Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Tabitha Hospice in Lincoln. Evelyn was the mother of William B. Read More	Evelyn Cassel, 95, of Lincoln and formerly of Ainsworth, died Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Tabitha Hospice in Lincoln. Evelyn was the mother of William B. Cassel, who is currently serving as one of the judges of the Nebraska Supreme Court. Evelyn was born on November 20, 1920, in rural Butler County, Nebraska, to Anton and Mary (Wiskocil) Miratsky. She attended schools in Butler County and was a 1938 graduate of David City High School. After high school, she moved to Omaha and later to Lincoln. During World War II, she worked for Western Electric manufacturing telephone units for the Bell System. She married John Burritt Cassel on June 12, 1947, at First Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln, while John was completing his college and professional education at the University of Nebraska after serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during the war. During this time, Evelyn worked at several establishments, including J.C. Penney Co. After John's graduation from the College of Law in 1950, they moved to his home town of Ainsworth, where he practiced law, first with George A. Farman, Jr., then individually, and last with their son. Both John and Evelyn were active in church and civic affairs. In addition to maintaining the family household and providing the primary care for their son, Evelyn supported John's activities, including service as Mayor of Ainsworth (holding office during the city's Diamond Jubilee in 1958), City Attorney, President of the Ainsworth School Board, director of the State School Board Association, local chairman of the Selective Service, member and chairman of the State Board of Educational Lands and Funds, Exalted Ruler of B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1790, Commander of the Brown County Post of the American Legion, Master of the Masonic Lodge in Ainsworth, and numerous offices of the Congregational United Church of Christ of Ainsworth. Evelyn served as Secretary of the Ainsworth Chamber of Commerce (during John's term as Mayor), President of the Ainsworth Junior Women's Club, leader of a Girl Scouts Brownies troop, Treasurer of the church's Women's Fellowship for 5 years, and in numerous offices of the church, including the Diaconate, Memorial Committee, Trust Fund Committee, and Vacation Bible School. The Junior Women's Club began the tradition of decorating the Courthouse Park for the Christmas holiday season, claiming for Ainsworth the title of "Christmas City of the Sandhills." After Farman's death in 1971, Evelyn became the office manager for John's law office and designed the new building constructed for the Cassel & Cassel law firm and completed in 1980. After John's death in June 1981, she continued to serve as the firm's office manager until the firm closed in 1992 when William began his judicial career. In addition to her son, William (Audrey) of Lincoln, survivors include her grandchildren, John Benjamin Cassel (Sarah Mongeau) of Champaign, Illinois, and Christina Marie Cassel, M.D., of Schuyler, sisters Mary Pospichal of David City and Gladys Birkel of Papillion, brothers-in-law David Cassel (Edith) of San Mateo, California, and Richard Cassel (Phyllis) of Palo Alto, California, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sister Helen Litty, brothers Anton, James, and Joseph Miratsky, sisters-in-law Lillian and Estella Miratsky, and Evelyn Hotler, brothers-in-law Andrew Litty, George Pospichal, and Charles Birkel, and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Ainsworth in late December. At a later date, private inurnment will follow at the Ainsworth Cemetery.
