Services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 26, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mercer, with the Rev. Randy Emgarten officiating. Burial will be at Mercer Hillside Cemetery. Evelyn was born in Byersville Township, McLean County, on Dec. 23, 1917, to Knute and Lydia (Krause) Norberg. She graduated from Butte High School in 1935. She married Conrad Freeberg on Nov. 15, 1939. They owned and operated the Mercer Cash Store, including an exchange at the North Country Bank in McClusky, until Conrad's death in 1967. Evelyn continued to run the store and took great joy in offering it as a place for friends and strangers to meet for coffee and socializing, until its closing in 1983. Evelyn married Lloyd Nelson on Nov. 22, 1984, in Minot. Evelyn lived her faith by example. She was a compassionate and caring person who befriended all who came into her life. She entered the Sheridan Memorial Home in McClusky in the spring of 2010, where she enjoyed each day until her passing. She is survived by four daughters, Conni (Gary) Gonser, Fargo, Lynn Van Vleet, Surrey, Pam Lill, Mercer, and Elizabeth (Randy) Anderson, Turtle Lake; one daughter-in-law, Eve Freeberg, Grand Forks; one stepson, Mick Nelson, Minot; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Dawn (David) Espindola and their children, Kayla and Andre, Eden Prairie, Minn., Ginger (Jahmal Wineglass) Sajiera and their daughter, Anais, Hadley, Mass., Jennifer (Chris) Songstad and their children, Dalton and Hadley, Moorhead, Minn., Scott (Pam) Van Vleet and their children, Cameron and Alexis, North Aurora, Ill., Mitchell (Staci) Van Vleet and their children, Halie, Samuel and Karli, West Fargo, Stephanie (John) Miller and their children, Emmy and Jake, Bismarck, Tonia (Chad) Lindeman and their children, Kaia, Gavin and Kambrin, Bismarck, Kate (Jeff) Hanson and their children, Aiden, Ethan and Kenzee, Turtle Lake, Marc (Jessica) Anderson and their children, Jaxin and Quinn, Minot, and Marin Anderson, Rolette; two sisters, Ruth Ryckman, Linton, and Dorothy (Ken) Stuberg, Leeds; one brother-in-law, Ed Lakoduk, Fargo; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Thompson, Coral Gables, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends who were very dear to her heart. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands, Conrad Freeberg and Lloyd Nelson; one son, Bob Freeberg; two sons-in-law, Tony Lill and Marvin Van Vleet; one sister, Gladys Lakoduk; and one brother-in-law, Don Ryckman.
