Description	:	Evelyn Ritchey Neubaum, 90, of Oakdale, California died at home on October 28, 2011. She was the youngest of four children born to James and Baina Cellan Ritchey in Grafton, Nebraska. Her sisters were M. Beryl Ritchey Talkington and Rouene Ritchey Pittard; her brother was Donald R. Ritchey. All preceded her in death. Ritchey. All preceded her in death. Evelyn was the salutatorian of the class of 1939 at Geneva High School, Geneva, Nebraska. While visiting her sister, Beryl in Turlock, California in 1939 she met her future husband, Edgar Neubaum. They married in 1940 and took up residence in Oakdale where Ed had recently purchased the Deluxe Barber Shop on 3rd Street. Evelyn was active in the UC Extension Home Department program where she took and then taught classes in home food preservation, sewing, and upholstery. She was also a Cub Scout and 4-H leader during her children's formative years. Evelyn's mother had taught her to play hymns on the pump organ, but she always wanted to be an accomplished pianist and organist, so she began taking lessons from Grace Little when her children were in school. She eventually taught piano and was the church organist for St. Luke's Lutheran Church and later for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County. In 1960 Evelyn enrolled at Modesto Junior College, then in 1963 at the newly opened Stanislaus State College. She received her B.A., graduating with honors, in 1965 along with her daughter Sharon. After obtaining her secondary teaching credential from CSU Stanislaus, Evelyn taught English and Reading at Oakdale High School from 1966-1969, Reading and English as a Second Language at Riverbank High School from 1969 1972, and after receiving her Master's degree from the University of Pacific in 1970 and a resource teaching credential she was a resource teacher at Oakdale High School until her retirement in 1988. She continued to teach part-time in the independent study program at Oakdale after her retirement. Evelyn was active in a number of organizations. She was a member of the Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon Branch of the American Association of University women since graduating from college. She served as president from 1988-1990 and during the 90s she also researched, wrote biographies of and developed several readers' theater programs about the pioneer women of this area. She was a founding member of the Stanislaus Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) as well as an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the California Teachers Association, the International Reading Association, the Western College Reading Association, the Stanislaus County Commission for Women, and the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County. In 1990, Evelyn was selected as one of the Outstanding Women of Stanislaus County by the Stanislaus County Commission for Women. She is survived by her children, Sharon Neubaum Arpoika and Stephen E. Neubaum, her son-in-law, Robert Jacobson, daughter-in-law Susan Beltrami Neubaum, grandsons Stephen C. Neubaum (Sonia), Hondo Arpoika (Christy), and Walter Jacobson, granddaughters Kerry Neubaum Templeton (Shaun), Lauren Neubaum Tuggle (Matt), Aeron Arlin Genet (Marc), and Mindy Jacobson Steward, and her great grandchildren, Laven Meyer, Miko and Hondo Arpoika, Luke and Zane Neubaum, Keenan and Shay Templeton, and Trevor, Evan, and Ryan Jacobson. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Neubaum and her grandson, Miko J. Arpoika. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County, 2172 Kiernan Avenue, Modesto, California on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 3:00 P.M.
